I am just barely begining to use this textbook in my speech pathology courses, but I do have one major complaint. The software, Anatesse, and studywares are not mac compatible. I was able to get the studywares cd to work on my mac by testing it out on a trial version of crossover mac, but the anatesse only shows the uninstall file..... Very annoying. No where on any of the info does it say what operating system is required. In addition on of my classmates is having issues running it on vista as well.... Fortunatly Seikel the main author is the head of the department I am in so I will be able to complain to someone.....
I don't say this lightly, but this book should be thrown in the trash. The sheer amount of incorrect information and typos should already give you a warning.The information is very unclear, often runs around in circles, and you reread the pages only to realize that at the end you haven't learned a thing. What the author does often is explain what anatomical structures are next to where in a rambling fashion; all without providing enough diagrams and pictures that correspond with the text. Sometimes the information contradicts what's been stated before, so you're left wondering what the hell is correct and what's not. It is absolutely maddening and nearly impossible to learn from this book. The few diagrams and pictures that are in the book are unhelpful, often incorrect, and unclear - whoever took pictures and drew diagrams for this textbook did not do their job. I'll give one example of many: in the ear chapter, the artist points to the cymba concha and labels it the triangular fossa. I had to check at least 3 other texts to confirm that this textbook got it wrong, and yes, it was wrong! I had to rely on my old anatomy textbooks and even bought the Netter's Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry text to supplement this craptastic excuse for a textbook. Even Barron's Anatomy and Physiology review book was more complete and clear than this one. I just don't understand why any professor would ever use this book! DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. You're going to end up learning the wrong information.
First, the good: this book has some great 2-color images of the structures presented, and the tables and charts are a useful reference.Unfortunately, the structure of the book is poorly conceived and very confusing for a novice student for several reasons:1. The author tries to describe various structures and systems in a narrative format, which can be effective in a face-to-face lecture but is very confusing in text format and a waste of the reader's time.2. The layout of the book is disorganized and counterintuitive. For example, the text in chapter 2 might describe a structure and then refer the reader to an image or diagram...in chapter 12.3. Each section of a chapter has a little box containing important keywords, but many of them are not bolded in the text while several other important words are bold but not included in the keywords box!4. The author seems to take the approach of introducing a concept and then repeating it numerous times in increasing levels of complexity. While this is a helpful way to teach a concept face-to-face, again, it does not translate well into text. In fact, he will often refer to a concept but not explain it until later in the chapter (or a later chapter!)5. When a structure has more than one common name, the text uses them interchangeably at different points in the book without any clarification. You might see one name listed in the chapter, but the definition is presented in the glossary under a different name!In short, this book fails as an introduction to the concept of neuroanatomy and also fails as a reference for clinical practice. If you are assigned this text for a class, be sure to pick up supplemental resources so you can actually grasp the concepts!
I used the third edition of this text in my undergraduate Anatomy & Physiology of Speech and Hearing class. At the time I really liked the book. It is easy to read and for the most part comprehend. Now that I am in graduate school for Speech Pathology, I was told by a professor that the book is very inaccurate. She stated that it was one of the worst Anatomy and Physiology books out for Speech and Hearing. She also mentioned that I would not be able to use it as a reference in any papers or research, due to the poor quality of the material. This is really unfortunate because, like I said earlier, I really liked the book.I do not recommend purchasing this text. If you are a future SLP, there are better resources out there with less errors.
This book is for my Anatomy class and is helpful in learning the material. I would say that the thing that is the most helpful about it is the quizzes you can give yourself at the end of each chapter to make sure you comprehend the important points. Helps me get the job done!
There are several inaccuracies in the book, as others have noticed, but nothing too major. Diagrams are not put in positions to make following along with the text easy. Other than that, it reads fine and is more-or-less current.
I feel like I spent most of my semester looking elsewhere for information or stumbling through all the errors in this book. Not only is it riddled with typos and grammatical gaffs, it is patently incorrect on a variety of anatomical points, and in many areas poorly and incomprehensibly written. Frequently the graphics are misleading or unhelpful. I got better and more understandable information by simply going to google and youtube to query the topics. At a minimum this text needs the assistance of an editor for proofing reading. I am working on a second degree and have never in my life encountered a text this unprofessional in its final form, let alone third edition! And the conceptual errors are inexcusable in a text of this nature. I hope it will be revised soon... Authors, please research your presentation of internal intercostal and pterygoid muscles ...
