This book gets 2 stars because overall I really liked the organization of the material. There were many useful charts for breaking down different groups of bacteria by biochemical reactions. However, this book is FULL of typos. Some are funny, some have no impact, and some are outright false and could cause you to remember incorrect information. In my class it seemed as if every chapter went into, we were warned of things in charts that were wrong or reversed. In one of the fist chapters we had to read, which was covering the use of colony morphology in identifying an isolate, the caption for a picture was describing the colony morphology of Bacillus cereus on a blood agar plate; but the picture was of a positive D-test that was performed on a Staphylococcus aureus. Not only was this the wrong picture, but this picture did not even belong in the chapter at all. If I were not already working in microbiology as an MLT I think this book would have been worse for me, but since I already have direct experience with it, I was able to simply laugh off the mistakes. Other people in my class working on becoming MLS's that have not worked in micro had a much more difficult time as it is difficult enough to learn diagnostic microbiology much less to have to remember which things in the book were right or wrong. So if you are from a clinical laboratory program and looking at this book as a prospective required text for your program, I would look elsewhere. This textbook is worth no where near $100 in its current condition. If it were a term paper, it would have received an "F" due to all of the proofreading errors.
I haven't looked through this book in a while (at least 6 months) and I no longer have it, but I still thought it was worth reviewing my thoughts about this book. This was a required text for my Clinical Microbiology course for my degree program in Medical Laboratory Sciences. I am one of those people who likes to read the text, but with this book about half way through the semester I gave up. The way the information was presented just seemed daunting. It was hard to pull out the important information out of the text, everything came across as a jumbled mess. I gave up on the text and just focused on the teacher's powerpoints. I am now required to use this text during my clinical year but instead of keeping this one I replaced it with Bailey & Scott's Diagnostic Microbiology text and it is a million times better. Do yourself a favor if this is a required text, pick up a better book, it will help so much with your class.
Excellent informative textbook of pathogenic microbiology, up to date, every kind of bacteria, fungus, and parasite that causes disease, and how to identify them. Majority of the book is devoted to bacteria, includes rarely-seen opportunistic pathogens, as well as common ones. Has chapters on media, safety,etc, as well as each kind of bacteria seen clinically; a particularly helpful feature is the section that is organized according to diseases of body systems such as "Upper & Lower Respiratory Tract Infections," "Genital Infections and Sexually Transmitted Diseases," "Infections in Special Populations" (Malignancy, Fetal/Neonates, AIDS,Diabetes etc), "Skin & Soft Tissue Infections," etc. Many photos of disease processes in real people, which aids in recognizing infections clinically. I bought it for a class, but I intend to keep it because it is well-written, interesting, and highly useful.
I rented this book twice for 2 different classes. I should have bought it and I plan to buy it now. It is a very resource to review a large range of microbiology lab techniques, organisms and concepts. It is detailed enough to help you understand and has very good pictures and charts that are easy to follow. This should be used as a supplement for anyone studying for the ASCP exam or any other national exam for microbiology. I have several microbiology texts, but I keep referring back to this text because of the simple way of explaining.The writing is not as technical as most other microbiology texts, so it keeps the concepts relevant to the reader.
I rented this book for a Medical Technology general bacterial review class. As for the content within the book, it far exceeded the information that I needed to know for the class. The only time that I found myself using it was when I had questions regarding organisms, testing procedures, and the different types of medias that are used routinely in the clinical laboratory. The rest of the time I relied heavily on the notes provided from the class, due to the fact that the book smells absolutely horrible! I've had this book since the start of the new year and the paper/plastic/ink smell is extremely nauseating and refuses to dissipate. Cracking open the book during my studies usually resulted with my stomach turning and just made it an uncomfortable experience.Glad I didn't spend the full price on this textbook.
For a science textbook, this was ... OK. If I were judging it by any other set of standards, I probably would only have given it 2 stars. The number one problem was that at least half of the textbook was filler that you had to slog through just to find the things you really needed to understand the subject. If not for that, it would have been a good textbook. It has plenty of charts and goes in more detail about the organisms and lab tests than most. I tried comparing it to another book by a similar title, Bailey & Scotts Diagnostic Microbiology. While B&S's book was easier to read and understand, it was lacking in crucial details at times, forcing me to turn back to this textbook. Some might want to try Essentials of Microbiology by Kumar. I'm still reviewing it, but it seems to be one of the few Micro textbooks that's not only simple and straight to the point, but also includes something lab students really need: Details about biochemical tests and reactions! At the very least, I think Essentials of Microbiology would be a good partner to this textbook.
