After I bought my G12 and shot with it for a month, there were a few features that didn't quite click with me. The manual that comes on the CD with the camera explains how to use the G12's features, but it doesn't put them in context. For example, the manual tells how to link a metering spot to an auto-focus frame, but doesn't explain why you'd want to do that.I previewed a few other G12 guides. The David Busch guide is on the more expensive side, but the way this guide ties the various features together makes it worth the extra money. It also does a great job of explaining some fundamental aspects of photography--like flash, focus, exposure, and how the zoom affects perspective--specifically as they apply while shooting with the G12.There are occasional factual errors in the book. For example, the book describes the G12's neutral density filter as a "virtual" filter that's applied electronically to a captured image; in fact it's a real optical filter that slides over the aperture inside the lens. This is important because it has implications for how RAW images are captured with this filter in place. The guide also says that you can use the exposure compensation control in full Auto mode, where that feature is actually disabled. However, these sorts of minor slips don't change the fact that I now feel like I "know" this camera, largely because of this guide.

This is among the best "manuals" out there. The author is an extremely clear writer and the book is hyper-organized. I feel like I have total control of this great camera -due entirely to this book. The information that comes with the camera is digitized and not very good. Finally, since this my first digital camera I was curious why there was no mention of the need or availability of a UV filter for it. So, i contacted the author David Busch at his blog (listed in the book) and within 20 minutes received a reply that noted that the digital sensor in the G12 is pretty much immune to UV, so a filter is not needed; and since the lens retracts when the camera is switched off, a filter isn't needed for protection either. Great book and great and responsive author. A best buy. ACR

I've been playing with cheap camera for a long time and finally invested in a much better camera with the Canon G12. I was kinda overwhelmed by all the new controls on this beast so I bought this book. It is an EXCELLENT resource. It gives overly basic info in some places, but warns you that it is there. so that you can skip over to the good stuff if you want to. In the "fun' sections everything is easy to find, easy to read and most importantly easy to understand. This book is a great resource to get to know your new G12, I highly recommend it.

Nice book. Lots of good illustrations etc. However, being an oldish 75, I have to read things over and over again before I understand what it means. Can I blame that on age? ha! I'll probably never use half the features on the G12. But I am enjoying the capabilities of the G12 just set on Auto. And it is capable! e.g. I set it on 80 iso, and took a flash shot of my "eye implant" Ya, I've got one of those. I was amazed with what I saw. The thing looks like a pin wheel, and not just a lens. So I did find out how to do a few things by reading the book. I'm about 3/4 of the way through it now. And I do intend to keep it handy, as a guide when certain photo situation arise. What I really did understand was his electronic comparison to F stops and shutter speeds, and things like depth of field, and depth of focus. As, it's the same concept with a film camera. I'm still trying to find out how to use fill in flash. It's covered in the book, but I'll have to read it over and over till the "HOW" sinks in. I would say, if you've bought the camera, you should get the book to go with it.

This is a great instructional book as are all of his books, we also got his book on the Nikon D300s. He is very thorough and is an easy read. The new digital cameras are so complex to learn you need a book like David's.David Busch's Canon EOS Powershot G10/G11 Guide to Digital Photography, Softcover Book by David Busch

Canon was very remiss in not including a written manual with the G12, however, I had a G9 and I must say that I never did figure it all out even with a manual. David Busch's guide is so easy to read and understand and I'm very glad that I got it. Maybe now I'll get more use out of my camera.

This is a VERY informative guide for the excellent Powershot G12. Camera manuals only go so far in describing the uses of all the camera functions. This book picks up where the camera manual leaves off. The G series cameras are quite complex and most people need the extra information this book provides to get the most out of the camera. I haven't checked, but I would assume Mr Busch has produced similar books for the newer G series models as well.

This is the best camera guide I have ever read, specific to my new G12, with all the answers to my questions in an accessible, easy-to-read and understand format. I wish Busch had written a manual for every camera I ever owned. I give this book my highest recommendation. If you buy a G12, this book is a must-read!
