Any review of this book would have to start out by stating that the format of this book is the same as its predecessor “Read this if you want to take great photographs”. It is short, at about 125 pages in length. There is a page of text followed, on the opposite page, by a photograph illustrating the point or theme discussed (i.e., color, lighting, angle, etc.). Hence if someone is looking for a lengthy academic tome on photographing people this is not the book. Then again, this book is not intended as such. It is intended as an introduction to people photography for those who have at least an understanding of the basics of photography. The author explicitly states this in the introduction (p. 7). He writes “a little technical knowledge is important too and I’m going to assume you know some fundamentals like the difference between shutter speed and aperture, leading lines and the rule of thirds”. For those who do not have at least this basic background this book would prove a waste of time. For those who are experienced in the fields (i.e., intermediate or above in terms of skill) this book would probably be too basic, even as an introduction to the subject. The book is really geared to the beginner photographer who has just mastered the basics. The book covers most of the basics covered of the subject. These include camera angles, the use of color and B&W, lighting, etc. One technical aspect it should cover but does not is depth of field as it relates specifically to portraiture photography. Ironically it has a few pages on depth of field but not specifically on how it is used in photographing people. Another weakness with the book is that it does not cover well the interaction between photographer and subject.
