I was a bit hesitant in getting this book instead of the PCCN review book by Thomas Ahrens due to the fact that this doesn't have any reviews (hence I am doing one now). The reason I chose this book is because it's directly from AACN, the organization that makes the PCCN certification exam. The thickness of the book is not intimidating at all, the chapters are divided by topics/systems that are adequate in length. The text size is relatively small: some chapters are about 10 pages while there are a few, more complicated ones that are about more than 30 pages. It covers the important topics. It gives you a concise information regarding pathophysiology, etc. and there is plenty of illustrations that help you to understand more. There are also mini case studies that pertain to the topic to help you gain a better clinical picture. I think this book has everything that is needed to know and prepare for the exam. The only downside is that it doesn't have any practice questions compared to Ahrens's book. AACN offers a packet of sample test questions (120 items) for sale on their website for $12. I say it's safe to buy study materials from AACN themselves since they are the ones that write the test, and of course you don't want any conflicting information as far as new research studies concerning new practices, etc. I took the PCCN exam today and passed. This book not only prepared me, but it's also going to be my reference guide in the future.
AACN essentialls was exactly what was needed to assist me in organizing my points of study towards my goal of earning my PCCN.
My first rental. This could be addictive.
good book
I thought the book had questions and rationales but I was wrong. I returned the book the next day to Trident textbooks but is still charging me
I used this book for my PCCN exam and passed without issue. Overall, I would rate it 8-9 out of 10. It's not too indepth, however it's not too shallow. Case studies throughout were great EXCEPT the answer/course of actions were not included! There are some typos here and there but manageable.I purchased the Critical Care version for CCRN prep, however the books are 98% the same it seems. Same chapters with even verbatim sentenances; supposedly 40 more pages exist in critical care version, but I am not sure where they are hiding. This book (both in fact) are not test prep books, which is why I purchased them. In addition, they make excellent resources for later use.EDIT: Now that I have compared the two books, I see that one of the main differences is that the CCRN version contains a section on troubleshooting hemodynamics. If this is something you need, I would suggest getting the CCRN version.I also used this book only to pass the PCCN examination on my first try.
