As a nursing faculty who teaching nursing process I am always looking for updates and resources for my students. This is the latest edition out about changes that have been made to Nursing Diagnosis. The process and thinking behind the changes and revisions for the 2015-2017 period are chronicled. The book is useful to me as a faculty to make sure that I am not only teaching the latest materials but also to help me understand the various definitions and classifications. I also like that with the book you have access to online resources that add to the richness of the materials about nursing diagnosis. However, this would not be a textbook replacement for students. This book is only about nursing diagnosis including defining characteristics and clustering of those characteristics and there are nice lists of "related to" factors for determining the etiology of the NANDA problem, but there this book has nothing in the way of nursing interventions or rationales. So, this was a bit of a disappointment as I was looking for something that was similar to Ackley and Ladwig's Nursing Diagnosis Manual put out by Elsevier publishing but this is not it. While there is useful information it is not comprehensive for care planning; it is what it says it is and that is a manual looking at nursing diagnosis only.

There are a few negative reviews from students expecting this to be a book that hand-holds through both nursing dx and subsequent care plans. It is not a care plan book! This book lists the current NANDA nursing diagnoses, the categories they fall within as well as discussion of revised and new diagnoses since last publication. Nursing, with a holistic perspective, is better served by nursing dx than by medical model dx which considers the injury or disease only.When I was in nursing school I thought the nursing diagnoses were a pain in the butt and a waste of time. They are also not used in all inpatient facilities when creating active care plans for patients. However, where I find them to be golden is in the outpatient setting, specifically for nurse practitioner run clinics and private practices.Depending on state licensure laws NP's still have to be cautious about diagnosing disease or other issues as it can still be considered solely a physicians domain. Working with your nursing dx instead of traditional physician model dx you can better protect yourself and assure you are working within your scope of practice should the worst ever happen and your license is investigated. Even in states where this is not an issue there is huge benefit to nursing dx as they cover far more "real people issues" than the dx offered by the physician medical model. As nurses we focus on the whole person - every aspect of their being and how it is affected by their current situation (not just specific to the injury or disease). Nursing dx cover this holistic view and create a nice, standardized framework for listing or describing your client's problems, challenges and issues that either need to be addressed or that impact the overall status and outcomes for the client.As a Holistic Nurse Practitioner I find nursing dx invaluable to my private practice. This book helps me find a descriptive framework that can be readily understood by my colleagues in nursing and that covers the many and varied issues that I consider when working with a client. In my practice, and that of most other NP's and outpatient RN's, a ready made careplan or suggested careplan is not required, as it is the combination of our nursing knowledge, abilities and skills aligned with whatever nursing theoretical framework we use, that determines the client's careplan. For example, my nursing theoretical framework is primarily informed by Watson's Human Caring & Holistic Nursing. My careplan may look quite different than that of a nurse who works within a different framework.If you are a student seeking nursing dx with careplans then this is not going to give you what you seek. If you are a working RN or NP this is a great resource to have, listing each dx and the criteria involved.

This book is as described. I am a nurse educator student and have not been in an associate degree program for some years and it was a good "update" for me when I was creating my teaching material.

I am finally using this textbook to complete an assignment and come to find that there was a publishing error and pages 357-388 are missing but then pages 389-421 were duplicated. Not only does this not help me for my coursework, it is too late to return to the seller. Not sure if I am the only one with this problem, but I would not be surprised if there is a large batch of these floating around.Nonetheless, I am told this will be a very useful and important reference to me in my Nursing program.

Great reference for nurses in understanding Nursing Diagnosis and relevance to nursing practice. This is not a care plan book, it is a "dictionary" of nursing diagnois with definitions. It is a reference guide, not a hands on tool for developing your care plans.

I got the kindle version of this book and I sincerely wish I had gotten a hard copy. I find navigating the book to be too difficult and normally I love the kindle versions because I can spotlight search through the book. I had to get this book for making care plans and so far every time I try to use it I end up just googling things instead.

This book is a reference intended to provide the most up-to-date nursing diagnoses, their definitions and classifications and not to provide information on how to create a care plan. You will not find interventions or rationales here. If this is what you're looking for, then it would be best to look elsewhere. However, for it's intended purpose, it's great. It helps to determine the most current and accurate nursing diagnoses by category. The book also gives access to online resources with more info.

I work in healthcare and spend a lot of time around nurses and at nursing conventions. I love medicine and anything to do with diagnostics so for me, this was an amazing resource to understand nursing diagnostic lingo. It is a solid reference guide that provides clear and concise information. this book isn't large but it is definitely jam packed with useful information.
