Long Island: Historic Houses Of The South Shore (Images Of America)
Download Free (EPUB, PDF)

In contrast to and predating Long Island’s famous Gold Coast (the North Shore), communities along the Great South Bay were home to hundreds of less publicized, yet equally impressive, mansions and historic houses. These homes were once owned by prominent captains of industry, popular entertainment figures, and movers and shakers of the day, such as the Bourne, Cutting, Gardiner, Gulden, Gustivino, Guggenheim, Hollins, and Vanderbilt families. Long Island: Historic Houses of the South Shore explores the South Shore’s famous resident personalities, including Schuyler Parsons, Fred Astaire, Anita Stewart, and Robert Pinkerton. The lifestyle of the South Shore is also portrayed, including activities like hunting and fishing as well as the famous beaches that served as tourist attractions.

This book was a window into the world of old Long Island and the beautiful homes that existed at one time, along with a way of life that has vanished. While some of the homes are no longer with us, some are still around today. I love looking at the architecture of these homes and what the builders and the owners thought was the height of architectural "elegance" at the height of the Gilded Age. It's sad that so many of these houses have been demolished and McMansions have popped up in their places as they cannot compare to the beauty and true style that was ever so apparent just a little over a hundred years ago.

I enjoyed the book very much, it was wonderful to see the glory of the old mansions of the past.

This book shares a lot of information about our precious Sputh Shore! We may not be the Gold Coast but the home and the families were just as impressive!

I couldn't put this book down. So much information and wonderful photographs!

Interesting read. Bought it to see Guggenheim's estate that became the neighborhood in North Babylon where I grew up.
