Being a first year nursing student with no previous exposure to care plans, I have found this book very useful in preparing paper work for clinicals. Each catagory of disease or illness is listed down the outer margin of each page for quick and easy look up. There are r/t and as evidenced by statements. Interventions are listed but there are no specific details to quantify them (time frames, amounts, how to put into action). Quantifying the interventions is the only downfall that I have found in using this book. If I had more experience this probably wouldn't be an issue.
This book is a must have for nursing school. It wasn't the required book for our program, but after another student and I purchased this book, everyone was borrowing it. It was such a hit, the staff is adding it to the book list for new students. LOVE THIS BOOK!!
I started my first hospital clinical class this semester, and I was compleatly overwhelmed with the paperwork my professor presented us with. We had to come up with a nursing diagnosis, and care plans which listed out interventions and expected outcomes. I had no idea where to start! I bought this book when I asked my professor what I could use as a resourse to help me, and she told me to find a nursing care plan book that I liked. While I admit that a lot of the info is basic, and the interventions common sense, this book is a huge help when you have no idea where to start. It has both care plans for each nursing diagnosis and then the same for some medical diagnosises (though I'm not all that impressed with the lack of nursing diagnoses applied to each medical diagnosis).Over all I would recomend this book to anyone who things their care plans need a bit of help--the info is laid out well and it givs a lot of answers for someone who is totally lost!
I am in an accelerated BSN program and designing care plans for pts can take hours. This book makes it a cinch; flip to a system and the list of NANDA/NOC/NIC is endless, breaking it down for us new RN as independent or collaborative NIC's. I think this is a great resource that can be used for many years into practice.
So, I did not find this book until my last semester of nursing school (unfortunately). BUT! It helped me tremendously in that short time. I think if I had had that book from my first semester I would have been so good with nursing diagnoses and care plans. The nursing diagnosis book that was required for us was just not this detailed. I felt like my instructors weren't that great with the diagnoses/interventions/care plan part. That is brand new information, and someone needs to give hints or something when you're starting out. I got this book and immediately realized how lost I had previously been without it--I mean, I knew I was lost... just didn't know I was that lost! If I could only recommend 2 books to nursing students, this would definitely be one of them. (The other is Saunders Comprehensive review for NCLEX.)
This book is a must have for a nursing major. I use this every semester to help me write care plans. It is easy to understand and gives you all the information you need to write an effective plan.
For this process-oriented, well-seasoned RN, I try to orient my practice, my day, to each pt.'s nursing diagnoses in order to make the endless, mind-numbing tasks meaningful. A colleague keeps this book in her cubbyhole, and I borrow it often. (Today I'm buying it.) I use its recommended interventions and then tweak them according to my own experience. The book also provides simple, reality-based outcomes. Within our computer-based charting system, I've merged what this easy-to-navigate text offers with my own experience, and have created modifiable templates for common nursing problems that I encounter. The book is well-suited for adult med-surg and critical care.In summary, this book helps (1) reinforce my RN role, (2) keeps me process- rather than task-oriented, and (3) functions as a useful tool for organizing my charting around nursing functions.
Has been a life saver during clinicals. Easy to follow makes wrighting care plans a breeze. As a nursing student this is a must have for myself and classmates. Just wish I had 3 months ago.
