Herman Leonard is by far one of the best photographers I have ever had the privilege to come across. I was visiting New Orleans a few weeks ago and came across a documentary on the local Louisiana station, it was a documentary on Leonard. If you ever have the chance to view this please do so because its an amazing story about a remarkable man. Generally, it takes a great deal to inspire me to want to study portraits, for me portraits are the most complex images to appreciate with the passage of time. Yet with Leonard's images (including his commercial works,) you can sit down and study them and you still find inspiration in them over and over again. His work is one of a kind, and his vision is the strongest I have ever seen in a photographer.

The meticulously detailed photos of jazzgreats like Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon, Billie Holliday, Quincy Jones andothers recreate the essence of an era so well that the viewer can actuallysee, hear and smell the flavor of the 40's and 50's NY jazz venues wherethe musicians played. Included in this wonderful book is a photo of thegreat Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, taken in 1970, long before theywere blown up by the Taliban. This alone makes the book vital.
I was given a copy of this book and I love it! The images capture a wonderful error in Jazz and Hollywood. (One of my favorites is Quincy Jones on page 171.) It was interesting to read about all of Mr. Leonard's life experiences too. Not only is this book great to sit down by yourself (of course with some great Jazz playing the back ground)and thumb through, It's a great tool in bringing generations together to discuss these "greats". I've shared it with my parents and younger sister, as well as friends and their parents. I've already bought a few copies as gifts and foresee buying more in the near future. This is a truly incredible work of Art that should be viewed and enjoyed by all.
I gave this book to my brother for Christmas. He is a professional trumpet player and concentrates on pure jazz. All of his jazz idols were in this book. He even enjoyed the other photos that were not related to the jazz profession. He knew of this photographer immediately because of his reputation for photographing jazz greats. Every other page, he would say to us, "look at this!" So it would appear that anyone connected to the jazz world would really appreciate this photo book.
If you love jazz, this is magic. If you love photographing people, this is magic. I love Herman's stories. His photographs give me something to attempt to emulate.This book is an amazing gift for the music and/or photography lover in your life!
