If there was a way to give this book zero stars, I definitely would. I don't know how, but somehow this book was worse than both my calculus 1 and calculus 2 professors combined. Every time I opened this book, a part of me died. This book will literally crush your self esteem, and any willpower and motivation you have to do well in a calculus class ever again. The examples don't help you understand anything. It literally just gives you the example problem, skips the steps you need to actually know, and give you an answer. Ok, cool thank you so much for that amazing and in depth walk through.I passed both semesters, by the grace of the calculus gods (bless those gods)To summarize: This book will make you feel like an incompetent failure, have you crying everyday wondering what you did wrong to have this as the required course text, make you never want to take a math class ever again, and have you reevaluating your career goals.
Worst math tb I have ever had! Way too wordy, zero visuals, and when it it explain something it did it in the most round about/ complicated way it could. You cant use this tb, it is only good for prac probs and that is it. Should never be used. too bad this is the required text for calc 1 and 2, so I have to suffer with this trash for a whole year instead of just one semester.
Even the professor I'm taking this course with, "hates" this textbook. This is the second book I've had to use by the same authors and publishers and this one is just as poorly written as my pre calculus book was. It is confusing and omits key concepts and methods that the Professor, thankfully can fill in; those methods are important to completing the problems in the book. Thank goodness the Professors for both of my courses were/are clear, concise and coherent, or I would not have received an "A" in pre calculus and I am still worried that my 4.0 GPA will be jeopardized by my current Calculus I class because of this confusing book. I still have to take Calculus II and may wait to take it at a different college if the Professor teaching the course uses the book by these authors.
This is not just the worst Calculus book in the history of mankind, it is the worst math textbook ever written. If you want to learn Calculus, there are many other great books including especially George Simmons, "Analytical Geometry with Calculus" and Michael Spivak, "Calculus." Both use clean, clear prose to explain complex ideas in an understandable way while also maintaining rigor. These two books flow from their authors deep understanding and love of the material. The MIT Open Courseware calculus class is also a superb example of a good, challenging, and clear calculus class.The Hughes-Hallet book is just junk, written by a committee of people, many of whom are unqualified. Hughes-Hallet herself does not have a Ph.D., and one of the main co-authors did not major in math in college and lacks an advanced degree.To make matters worse, the graphic design of this book is awful. Everything is in a tiny font, all scrunched up together. There are no visuals. The authors will take a relatively simple concept that could be explained in a simple table, chart, or graph, and they will write two pages of dense, poorly written prose about it.The book does not say whether you need a calculator or not for questions, so you will sit there looking at problem and thinking, "Did I learn how to make all of these calculations?" In fact, you did not. They want you to use a calculator, but in the meantime, you have wasted 15 minutes going back over your notes to see what you missed.This read like something undergraduates, maybe ed majors, got together and tried to cobble together a book from their own flawed understanding of the materials and someone else's notes. Amateur hour.
This book teaches mostly by example and does not explain concepts that well. Either way, it was a book I needed for college and you probably need it too so just make sure you understand whats going on with the topics because the book isn't bery go at explaining that.
The book is okay but I think this book is not the best for those who aren't doing very good in Mathematics because this book is lacâk of explanation and examples for those who have difficulty in approaching new topics in Mathematics especially Calculus since many people agree that Calculus is a very heavy subject.
If I had the paper version I would burn this book. The chapters are short and don't explain anything. There are quite a few questions after a chapter that aren't discussed in the previous text. The practice questions are challenging and tricky. They look to trick you and some of them are just plain frustrating. Luckily I have the solutions manual and I finally hit a fit of rage in Chapter 8 where the solutions manual doesn't even explain why the answers are so. The solutions manual is written as if you understand what you're doing. If I did, would I be in the damn solutions manual? Really though.. There are more questions in the textbook than actual information. There is no attempt to teach you calculus. This textbook should be called "a encyclopedia of popular calculus questions". There are many other textbooks out there that put this to shame. I can't understand why my college uses this?
It gives limited explanations and simpler examples than those that were on my exams. Really couldn't learn much from this book.
