I had to purchase this book specifically for a college chemistry class (required the Mastering Chemistry Online component too). Having used another chemistry book several years before, I was preloaded with knowledge that made me realize how thin this text is compared to others. Much of the content is oversimplified where details are needed. Worst is the number of syntax errors in the chemical equations. Superscript numbers and mismatched charges. These simple editorial mistakes add a tremendous amount of confusion to an entry level chemistry student. Many of my peers spent much time scratching their heads rather than quickly absorbing content and moving forward. If you're thinking about purchasing this text for your own benefit (self-paced learning) skip it and pick up Introduction to General, Organic, & Biochemistry by Bettelheim, et al. If you must use this text for a class, I recommend picking up a second chemistry book to cross-reference. This book does have some strengths (great pictures, lots of good work problems at the end of each chapter, and plenty side-note information that ties the material to real world/healthcare related matters. The errors, however, make it so I can't recommend it to an entry-level chemistry student.
I really enjoy this text because of the organization, the simplification, and the way it uses illustrations to demonstrate important principles. I'm in Organic Chemistry now and also used the same text for inorganic chemistry last term. The only element of the text that is not helpful is all the errors. But, my professor gives us extra credit for finding the errors. So, I suppose it all works out in my favor. Sometimes the errors are typos and other times they're completely off-track. The "Selected Answers" book for the 7th edition is also error ridden. At times it gives you answers to questions that do not correspond to this edition, which is not helpful. But I do recommend purchasing the selected answers manual. It has helped me 90% of the time understand a problem due to the extended work shown or explain to a classmate how a problem is carried-out. Good luck, and have fun!

This is a great book! It gives example problems and really walks you through it simple and clear every step. It shows you how to use your common sense and intuition to help derive answers. The rules of chemistry are laid out in a clear and simple way. The pictures are great, and this is a great book for anyone going into the health field in the future because it has lots of stuff about health and how chemistry is related to the medical field. It's just an easy read when it comes to chemistry books. This is a non-science major chemistry book, I took that course as a refresher and I am now taking the science major chemistry and I can tell you that this book has less to read than the science major chemistry book so don't complain. :) Anyway, learn chemistry, read this book! Oh, and it is imperative that you work the problems out of the back of each chapter. You must do this to learn it and retain it. Believe me, I am speaking from experience. Solving problems pays. If you want to crush your exam, work and solve all the problems you can. Best of luck!
This book is full of errors. Some of the answers in the back of the book are plain wrong. If you have to buy it for a class, double check anything that sounds funny to you. If it's not required, don't buy it. If it is required, sell it back because it's not a very good reference.
I rented this book and it's exactly as described, EXCEPT that if you are renting you will NOT get the access code and I didn't know that because in the description it said that you would also get the code so I was very upset about that because then I had to go and purchase it separate for 70$.
This is a fantastic textbook. The organization is very well done and the writing is clear and to the point. The graphics and images are very helpful. I'm glad that I purchased this textbook (Kindle version) because I will use it as a reference for years to come to brush up on concepts that become hazy with time.
Book beautifully bound; great condition; shipped very quickly; however if you have an option to get a different "text" content I would recommend going a different route; the text itself is very wordy and can be difficult to comprehend; there was nothing wrong with the product but if you are able to get a different version I would recommend it.
