Theron Humphrey's "Maddie On Things" is lighthearted and funny, but it is SO much more. It is the visual story of inter-species trust, collaboration, and (yes) love. Theron didn't set out to document the patience and prowess of his adopted coon hound. In fact, he was engaged in a much more "serious" documentary project at the time these images were made. Hopefully, the documentary work will also be published, but for now, we have this remarkable, life-affirming testament to everything that is good about the world. Good girl, Maddie.
I enjoyed this book for the pictures of Maddie. It took a lot to get all the very interesting photos of Maddie. Those who love dogs would enjoy this. I gave it three stars because I felt it needed a little more information on each picture. There is a whole story of how each picture was taken that it would have been nice to hear. .
I found Maddie thru Facebook, and I thoroughly enjoy following her adventures. So when I learned about an upcoming book, I knew immediately I would purchase one. Turns out, I ended up purchasing 3 of them. One for myself, my daughter, and my brother. I love the images in the book. Definitely a book to look at, if you are feeling sad or down. These pictures will automatically just cheer you up looking at them. The only disappointment I had was, I wish there would have been more writing. A little "back story" so to speak about the pictures.
I had to do a presentation on a photographer for my college photography class and I bought this book to use as a prop for my report on Theron. The book seems well-bound and includes a 3 page introduction with a single photo on each page thereafter. Under each photo, the City/State, and Month/Day/Year taken are displayed. I agree with other customers that it would be nice to have some more information on each photo. I know there is (or was) a video of Theron speaking at Google on YouTube and he explains some of these photos, but I would like that written in the book! One thing to note; a lot of photos from the book are not easy to find online, and having the book is worth a lot more than just viewing them online, especially since the book better supports the photographer! The actual dimensions of the book are 8.25”x7.25”x0.75” The book is 159 pages with about 149 pictures, and one in the 3-page introduction. I hope you find my reviews helpful!
I was unfamiliar with Maddie on Things until I saw the author and Maddie on tv. I fell in love with their story and couldn't wait to get the book. It did not disappoint! I am inspired to document my own adventures with my rescue dog and share them with people I know. This is a book that I will keep on my table and look through any time I need something to make me smile.
I discovered Maddie several years ago on-line. Like many people I'm sure, at first I thought the pictures were photo shopped. Time taught me they weren't as I learned the story behind the pictures. Maddy is a rescue dog who proved to be amazing patient and put up with the various poses her person set up. What I love about the pictures are Maddie's expressions. Many are just Zen like, in while in others she seems to get the joke. My favorites are where she appears to be showing pity for her silly human. I may be a bit biased I have a rescue Foxhound who has different coloring than Maddie but their faces are the same and I've seen those looks. If you're an animal lover you will get a real kick out of this book.
The idea behind this book is great, but the picture quality is absolutely horrible. The pictures are very yellow and none of them are crisp. Also, I would have liked a little information on "dogs and physics," like the title suggests. Maybe a nice gag gift, but I was underwhelmed!
I stumbled upon Maddie on the Internet and looked forward to seeing a new photo as she and Theron traveled the US. It is incredible to see all of the crazy and amusing places she is balanced on.The book is a fast flip though, but one that you'll keep coming back to for the smile it puts on your face.
