I used this as a textbook for my Career Counseling class (master's level). The book was a good overview of career counseling. I found it to be highly readable, well-written, and well organized.
It's about time! Someone has finally written a career development textbook that is enjoyable to read. I loved this book and recommend it to anyone interested in learning about career development interventions.
This textbook was most helpful for my Lifespan Career Development Course. Has the most up to date theories (at this printing) of career theories. It also provided examples of career counseling interventions throughout the lifespan. Drawback is that there is another more recent edition. But for the money this text provides a good resource in career counseling.
Information in this text is redundant and a bit common sense. It has all of the specifics, and it does give you lots of case studies. Overall it does what a required text must, but it was far from engaging, in my opinion.
Used this book for my master's degree in community mental health counseling. I went on to do an internship in a career services site and found that the information I read in this text was very helpful when pursuing this field. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in assisting people on their career path.
A typical textbook that takes 25 pages to explain what could be summarized in 5. This book might be great for potential career counselors, but if it weren't for my national certification questions drawing heavily from career counseling, I'd never buy this book. Besides...$104...really?!
I agree with several of the 3 star and below reviews. This text was required for a Masters program (as is typical). It is indeed very DRY - it takes 25 pages to explain what could be summarized in 5. If not for CACREP requirements, it would probably do better as an elective course for those who desire to enter the field of career coaching/counseling. Also, this is the second Pearson book I've purchased that the binding has split, with some pages completely severing from the spine which now decreases the resell value. For $100 you'd expect product quality to be somewhat decent.
This textbook was helpful for getting a general idea about many theories and career development in general. The content was covered lightly, but the book was a great first start for future career counselors.
