"When Not Performing" is a fascinating account of very talented musicians in New Orleans with personal and concise stories about family, hardship and triumph and the effect that Katrina had on many of their lives. Each musician has a one page story and beautiful photograph. It is the lives of artists, some well known, some not - but each has a story to tell and all are woven into the fabric of this rich city of treasures!
What a delight to sit down and get to "visit" with favorite musicians through this wonderful book. As one who regularly partakes of the musical feast available in New Orleans, I particularly enjoyed the glimpses into the lives of the musicians "when not performing" and the photographs that captured who they are, not just what they do. David and Fred, along with Pelican Publishing, did such a great job...when's the next edition?
This is a "Must Read" for all music lovers and especially for those who love New Orleans and the history that goes along with it
I have been to New Orleans a great number of times, I love music and consider myself a foodie, have tolerated the sweltering heat at the Jazz Festival twice, and have even read the greatly acclaimed, but silly book "The Confederacy of Dunces" and now I am taking great pleasure in reading Fred Lyon's book. I am getting to know New Orleans on a more personal level now, and perhaps will seek some of these music artists the next time I visit. His book is also motivating me to search for more information on the musicians via the internet and to sample the music. It has turned reading a book into a real interactive process. The pictures are fantastic, and the text is very well written. I highly recommend this book.
We received this book as a gift and have enjoyed every bit of it. It's the type of book you love to have around to just pick up, open to any page, and find a wonderful and endearing story. Any jazz lover would welcome this charming book into their collection and anyone who hasn't been to New Orleans will want to visit after reading these musicians' stories.-Inn New York City
I read this book after receiving it as a gift and then purchased several for gifts for friends. Excellent read - interesting and informative. It really shed some insight on musicians and thier motivations. I highly recommend it!
