This book had a profound impact on my professional and personal life. It helped me to identify those inherent gifts (talents) which I possess and gave me specific insights into how best to apply them. In fact, after reading the book, I contacted Rallph Mattson and went through his Motif process (based upon the book). From this report they prepared a "best use" analysis which I regularly share with my management in discussions of next assignments and promotions. It has helped me and them to jointly make career decisions that benefit me and the company. The book's philosophical basis is supported by a new book (1999) by Gallup "First Break all the Rules". After interviewing 40,000 people in 800 companies, they found that the one thing that most negatively impacts an organization's ability to reach its full potential is its inability to tap into and utilize the unique, inherent talents of each person in the organization. The one thing Gallup does not offer is a means of identifying those talents and putting them to use. Ralph Mattson (who published his book well in advance of Gallup's) has a proven, effective means of doing that. I strongly urge anyone who is or has ever wondered if there was something else that would make them feel fulfilled or give them a sense of peace and contentment, to read this book.
Just based on the title there could be some confusion. This is infact a tool for finding a ministry. Be that as it may, it's a tool more designed for Theology students to pick just which part of the field they're looking to go into. Granted most in ministries who will use this book will be looking for paid positions it doesn't make this book a general career finder.Going by just the title you'd think this could be a book to help anyone find their career in anything. It's not. It's more specific then that. But hey, that's why us avid book readers read the books description, right!?All in all it's a fairly helpful book if you need clarification on the path of ministry you are choosing. However, if you're trying to decide between computer science and teaching, well, a better book would be 'What Color is your Parachute'.
I've used this resource since 1990 and passed it to nearly a hundred persons. It has my highest praise. This book links the capabilities that God has given me to God's purpose for me. It is an invaluable tool for directing and strengthening one's job search and providing practical means to pursue ongoing personal happiness. If only every high school or college student could read this as they feel their way toward preparation for life!Seriously, this is a classic resource, especially for Christians.
This book was written for a Christian audience, so don't get it if you don't appreciate that perspective, or if you can't work around it.But regardless of your views on God... Empirically, Ralph Mattson's way of approaching this subject is both effective and unique compared to what I have seen in the rest of the what-color-is-your-parachute genre. How you work, what makes you tick, what motivates you, and how to identify your strengths so that you can pick a career path that will deeply satisfy you... all of this is addressed here, and the information is presented such that anyone can work through it themselves and come up with some great insights that will guide them in career decisions.I first read Ralph Mattson in the early nineties. I have watched several people's careers blossom over the last two decades because they read this book and put what they learned into practice. I have been able to make educated choices about what will or won't be a good position for me based on what this book taught me. I look back on the last 20 yrs and I am glad I read it back then.I am also glad it's still available now... I dug it up and ordered a copy to our summer nanny the other day who's about to graduate with multiple majors from her undergrad program, and is smart as a whip, but still has only a vague sense of what she should "do with her life." I am confident when I recommend this to her. If she finds time to read it in the midst of her 18 hr course load this semester, she'll be happy she did.So - if you are searching for a framework you can use to think about where to invest your energy for the rest of your life (including not just career but volunteer work, causes, hobbies, etc.) then think about getting this book.
This book offers a fascinating perspective on why we do what we do. Instead of presenting a series of questions to test your "personality type," it helps you to examine past actions, successes, and failures, which point to your "central motivational thrust".For example: someone who is motivated to excel and achieve will enjoy work that provides a series of varied challenges to be overcome. This person needs to see visible progress and completion. This person will be frustrated by repetitive tasks that never seem to be finished. This person will thrive in a career that requires developing a sharpened set of skills, where he can become an expert, and where he can make satisfying achievements.Following the process that Mattson and Miller lay out, I developed a deeper understanding of what makes me tick, which is invaluable in guiding me toward a career.
