This is a great resource for someone starting out as a theater educator, or for someone looking to build an existing program. This amazing resource provided step by step instructions to help me get through my first two years of full-time teaching and build my theater program into a meaningful and student-centered program. As a professional artist career switcher I appreciated all the ins and outs for surviving in a school. From dealing with administration to rallying parent volunteers to field trips and more, this book posed questions (and answered them) on how to deal with teaching situations for which I was unprepared. I highly recommend this book for every drama teacher's collection.
I started teaching theatre part time last year and am now a full time at the same high school. This book helped me get to where I am right now. When I first started out, I had an idea of how I wanted to be as a drama teacher but what I didn't comprehend is all the the little things that go into the job. This book gives you plenty when it comes to the little things, such as how to handle administration, field trip procedures, and angry parents. What I used the most really is the Appendices in the back that offer a multitude of example forms ranging from production contracts to rehearsal schedules. Real-World also offers real-life situations that have happened to the authors to show that "what could go wrong, can go wrong." There is so much information in this book but everything is layed out so simply. As I enter my second year I will definitely be using it more. Absolute must buy for new teachers
This past year was my first as a Theatre Educator and this book proved to be an invaluable resource. It is written by two highly respected educators who understand how to prepare someone to enter this exciting and sometimes stressful position. I enjoyed how the book is broken up into seasons (autumn, winter, spring, summer) so that the content is more manageable and you get to experience the journey of what a year in the life of an educator entails. Helpful topics include how to handle administration, casting, classroom management, etc. If you are entering the world of theatre education, then this book is what you need to assist you in feeling prepared and what to expect. It's truly a must have.
