Beautiful Chaos: A Life in the Theater by Carey Perloff is a fantastically insightful read. It will take you right into the heart of the scrum that making real theatre that matters truly is. The entire second half of the book is like a graduate-level class in artistic directorship. The first half introduces you to a singular asset in the American theatre, Ms. Peloff herself. And she is worth studying in her own right as such, and as an example of the too-rare phenomenon of a strong and inspiring female leader in our art.
So you want to work in the theater? This book gives you an honest and inspirational view on why you should follow your passion. Carey doesn't sugar coat her struggles and is magnanimous around her MANY successes.My only hope is that this book will also be released on tape so people can hear her passionate voice.
I have been going to ACT since 1971. I was so happy to read Director Perloff's philosophy of theater. I would like to thank her for her honest and engaging story of her career and for her honest depiction of a life in the theater.
