Hot Springs was one of the first areas set aside as a federal land reservation in 1832―predating the first national park at Yellowstone by 40 years. In 1921, it was officially designated a national park. Physically the smallest of the 59 US national parks today, Hot Springs measures just larger than 5,500 acres. Its 47 on-site springs produce more than 700,000 gallons of thermal water per day. From early natives who quarried novaculite found in the surrounding hills to famous politicians, performers, and athletes, people have been coming to these springs for thousands of years to partake in the supposed healing powers of the water. Pres. Franklin Roosevelt, boxer Jack Dempsey, and French opera diva Lily Pons are a few of the visitors who made the trek to the “Valley of the Vapors.” The history of Hot Springs National Park revolves around peoples’ interactions with its thermal water.

I've lived in this town for almost 20 years and I've seen many of the old photos in this book. It's awesome though to read the history of this unique little burg and see the places behind the history.

What a fantastic book! Having lived in Hot Springs most of my life I had no idea the scope of our wonderful National Park. In this Images of America edition Mary Bell Hill gives us an informative look at Hot Springs National Park through the eyes of the photographic collection of the park itself.Hot Springs National Park has a terrific history and Hill tells the story with well chosen photos and beautifully written text, giving the reader a sense of the time and the growth of the park. I enjoyed learning about the evolution of the buildings, the healing waters and how they were dispensed. I was amazed to learn crude buildings were built around the springs before more substantial Bath Houses were built. Bathhouse Row has survived floods and fire, hosted famous visitors from President Franklin Roosevelt to Kate Smith to professional baseball players for spring training. Hot Springs National Park has promoted health and well being with the spring water and outdoor activities in the beautiful park land surrounding Bathhouse Row. Not only does Hill take us through the early history of the park, she takes us through the hard times the park experienced and the renewed interest and recognition of the historical significance of Hot Springs National Park and Bathhouse Row. As I said, I live in Hot Springs and enjoy this unique National Park on a daily basis. No other book that I have read on Hot Springs National Park (or Hot Springs for that matter ) does this beautiful national treasure justice. Being a curator herself, Hill is qualified to tell this beautiful story and she does it well. You only need one book on Hot Springs National Park and this is THE book.

The two books complement each other. One is about "people" and the other is about "buildings".
