Over three decades ago the author, Dr. Kevin Nugent, had the opportunity to do rounds with Dr. Berry Brazelton. Dr. Brazleton was known as a pioneer in infancy research. That day changed/shaped the way for Dr. Nugent as he observed Dr. Brazleton interacting with a one day old baby and her young mother. After seeing "Sarah" his day was profoundly changed and that shaped his way for child development.Growing up my mother was a child development specialist so I have always had an interest in children. That was over 30 years ago for me and now I have a 6 week old. This book was of great interest to me being a first time mother and not sure if I was understanding my new baby. This book does not set out to give advice on how to care for your baby but rather help you recognize your baby's behavior and expression through a page full of descriptions and photographs. Most of it you will already know, the gut feeling you get but too many times new parents doubt themselves and are quick to either call the pediatrician or turn to an internet search engine to see if it is `normal'. This book will help you go with your gut and listen to your baby's behavior language through the words and photographs.This book has helped me understand my 6 week daughter better without wondering what she might be telling me. The book is broken down into 6 sections with a subject on the left page and a photograph/picture of the right pertaining to the subject. The one that I was not aware of was "The Fencer Response". I have now been observing my baby more closely to see which side she turns her head when she lies down and what arm is extended.The book is well written and very easy to read. Having a newborn in the home I was able to get through the book within an afternoon.
