The day after Hurricane Ike made U.S. landfall at Galveston, Texas, photographer Bryan Carlile was in a helicopter, working a service contract as a first responder. He took with him a native Texan’s good memories of the Gulf Coast but brought back images that tell the sobering story of this massive and historic storm.  After Ike includes more than one hundred aerial photographs Carlile took of the hurricane’s grim aftermath accompanied by Carlile’s eyewitness captions. In some places, Carlile is able to show images from “before Ike” that bring home the magnitude of the changes wrought to both natural and human habitats.  In a thoughtful, personal essay, Andrew Sansom, who was raised on the Texas coast, reflects on the realities of living in “Hurricane Alley.”

This is an excellent coffee table book that covers the destruction from Hurricane Ike, in particular around the Galveston vicinity. The book is quite large, has excellent quality print, and the photos are amazing. I do feel a bit guilty looking at the destruction of the lives of good people, but I would rather think I am honoring and acknowledging the power of nature (somehow I doubt this book will be found on the coffee table at the Galveston Realtor's Office or Galveston Chamber of Commerce!).Anyway, great job on the book; most people that are interested in nature's fury will love the book.

We spent a couple of weeks in Galveston last summer and this book was in the beach house we were staying in. It was surreal to feel so relaxed in a place where the carnage so poignantly showcased in this book had occurred. It made me feel proud to be a Texan and see how we can persevere even in the face of something like this; but the imagery also made every one of us in that house feel that much more grateful and humble for what we have. (That picture of Winnie the Pooh may be one of the most haunting images I've seen.) Now we're just waiting for the photographer to do a follow up on all these locations and show just how far we've come.

Enjoyed the book for its photos of the damage from Hurricane Ike. I do wish there were a few more written details in some places and some better before and after photos would have helped too. The book is worth the read though as there are not any other books out there to really compare it with. Some of the photos seem repetitive but in general it clearly shows how bad the damage was from Ike and how amazing the people of Galveston are to have already rebuilt from it!

I experienced Ike first hand and your books depicts exactly what it looked like. Very impressive pictoral book. I am pleased.
