This is a great book. I used it when I was in residency. I am now a practicing psychiatrist. I can still, even to this day, see how this book has shaped my clinical interviewing in a positive way. It is practical, it takes the theory and gives you examples of how to phrase things. It has mneumonics that help you remember all of the different parts of the interview. it enables you to do a pretty complete diagnositic interview when you need to. I remember getting compliments from my supervisors after they observed my interview when I started using these methods. It is a great book to get when you are wondering about how to get started when you first begin conducting interviews.
I'm a 4th year med student who bought this book to assist with audition rotations. At least in my case, I didn't feel like my 3rd year clerkship did a very good job teaching me not just what information to get, but how to get it. This is a great resource - easy to read, has great little tips, and helps with some of the "special situations" (like how to ask psychiatric questions with kids). I feel like it has definitely improved my information-gathering skills.
This book is required reading for me in a psychiatric nurse practitioner program. This book has great ideas for learning diagnostic criteria and for eliciting information from our patients. It is also well-written and pleasant to read.
I love this book! I used it to help study/review for my board certification as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner... and wished I had bought it sooner in my training! It would have been so helpful as I was doing my very first psychiatric interviews. Great mnemonics if you learn well that way. I use it for reference often even now.
Really helped with my interviewing skills as an intern, and loved how he had a section on anxiety and obsessions because those were my weak spots. I also like how it gave tips, and alternative questions if you weren't eliciting any answers from the basic questions. Great for an intern.
This is an excellent book for psychiatric resident from first to fourth year.I have seen how poorly were conducted some mock boards by certain residents because of interviewing skills difficulty.
This is a good book if you are beginning as an intern or want to know therapeutic interventions that have worked over the years as it relates to intake interviews and other client-related openings. It also gives tips about getting out of being stuck while in an interview, which happens often.
Written in easy to understand language, this is an invaluable book for those learning or reviewng the psychiatric interview.
