I recently purchased a D5300 with Nikon lenses 18-55, 55-200, and a Nikon SB-500 Speedlight (flash). The last time I took a picture was when Reagan was president and cameras have changed ... to say the least. The new Nikon D-5300 is awesome! The lenses are awesome. The flash is awesome. To use them together effectively is as simple as turning the camera on, putting the camera on auto, and fire away. The camera does about everything flawlessly.Of course, there is SO much more to this camera - picture taking - system and this Rob Sylvan book has been a great help! For example, the Nikon D-5300 has the ability to create HDR pictures in camera without having to use Photoshop or another program. What it does is take an underexposed picture and an overexposed picture and combine them into a potentially much better picture. Rob explains HDR and how simple it is to do this in the camera, explaining why you might want to do this, and then shows you how to do this.Rob explains each of the pre-programmed automatic modes of the camera grouped in the menus "Scenes" and "Effects". He also covers the commonly used ones on the selection dial like P, S, A, M and portrait, sports, etc, with examples. By the way, the Nikon D5300 also comes with the View NX software which makes it easy to fine tune your pictures without having to use a complicated program like Photoshop. It isn't as capable as Photoshop but it is probably very good for most people.Rob is very complete, as far as I can tell, and you will enjoy his style of clear and understandable writing. The camera manual itself is okay but the Nikon.com site is a great help together with this book.
