As I grew up in the same neighborhood as Dolly during the 30's & 40's in Fall River, Massachuetts I found this book especially interesting. However, anyone who enjoys a wonderful story about an amazing family will certainly enjoy it also. Therefore, I recommend it highly and give it5 stars.
I was not expecting to enjoy this book; I thought it would be a less than exciting memoir of someone else's life. But the stories and the writing are terrific and I finished it in one afternoon. Each chapter nearly stands on its own; so the book is more like a collection of short stories. And it is a window into what perseverance, hope and hardwork can accomplish. Kudos to the author!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Dolly Bentson's upbringing by her loving, immigrant Portugese parents in Fall River , Massachusetts. What a legacy her parents left behind: 10 interesting, unique, productive children! The importance of family is first and foremost for her selfless,micro-managing mother and her resilient, kind-hearted father. Dolly realistically described her sometimes conflicted feelings of growing up among so many siblings with few material possessions but with an abundance of love. I think Dolly should write a sequel so her readers can catch up on what happened during the next phase of her life.
Having entirely missed growing up in the 1930s and 40s by three decades, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about this little slice of Fall River during those times. I've always heard the stories from my parents and grandparents, and have never tired of the tales. This little gem of a book is just another fabulous source to feed my Fall River passion. Many kudos to the author for a fine job.
