I really enjoyed this book and her tales of her journey into beekeeping. She provided such imagery that I was able to transport myself into the field with her, or her apartment.There are a couple of parts that described her affairs with married men and that really disturbed me that it was so casually mentioned as if it was no big deal. I saw no reason whatsoever for them to be included. They didn't add to the story at all and in my opinion actually detracted from the value of it.
I just read a different book about beekeeping (Honeybee: Lessons from an Accidental Beekeeper by C. Marina Marchese) which I found not nearly as enjoyable as this one though I had expected them to be similar. That experience made me want to leave a positive review here as I think this was a excellent, but much overlooked book. I read _Beeing_ in 2007, but luckily I put a review upon finishing on goodreads which I will post here:This book is a very good memoir of a single mom in New England who gets into bee keeping by chance and learns to love it. I thoroughly enjoyed it as I have been interested in beekeeping (the mechanics of, not the doing of) since reading _The Secret Life of Bees_ by Sue Monk Kidd several years ago. It was a fast read and humorous. The author has a strong independent female spirit.
Beeing is about learning to deal with life, from the big problems down to the little ones. It is about learning those lessons we all learn about in this school we call life. And understanding that we will never learn everything. We are always students.But be warned, that the book is very much a emotional roller coaster ride, making me both laugh and cry. Also, I learned as much about beekeeping from this book as I have from books written by beekeepers. The author Rosanne Daryl Thomas really crafts a lovely and heart felt memoir.
This is such a wonderful book and one of my favorites. It's funny, witty and smart. I have a hard copy signed and wouldn't think of selling it.
My beekeeping friend suggested I read this book. I am not bee person but I am a gardener and I loved this book. It hit on so many other nuances about nature, gardening, being a woman, motherhood and a glimpse into a special year of this woman's and her daughter's life. I was only sorry the book ended, I would loved to have read more. Maybe there will be a sequel! I also bought the book as a gift for my fellow female gardening friends and they loved it too.Holly
