Usually AHIMA does a good job of presenting difficult material in language that students can understand. It is not the case with this book. I am a student in a health information technology program, and healthcare reimbursement is a vital component of the curriculum. The material has to be mastered for a graduate to pass the exam for RHIT certification. Not only does this "textbook" present the insurance reimbursement system in the US as incomprehensible, but the text itself does nothing to help students understand it. By chapter 7, which attempts to explain the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System, I found myself laughing out loud while I scratched my head. In one paragraph, I found no less than 20 acronyms and 12 reference citations. It was difficult to find any text that made a point. Casto needs to decide if she is presenting a textbook or a reference book. Attention Instructors! Please do not subject your HIT students to this book.
