When I first saw this book I got scared because of the size and weight of it, but when I finally got the courage to open it and start reading it, it surprised me! I found this book to be really good and the pictures are great and help out a lot. The case studies at the end of each chapter are really great and got me to understand more and think about the content of the chapter, which by doing that helped me to remember!! Also the last part of the book: Laboratory methods, was a great help to me both in preparing for class and when it came to writing the report, the book tells you step by step how the procedures are done. I will always keep this book for reference as I know it will help in during my career as a lab technongist.
This book has become almost a standard text. But it has problems. For one, the index fails to list much of what's in the book. For instance, kallikrein, an important cytokine in coagulation, is not listed in the index, though it is talked about in the text. Abbreviations are introduced without a hint of what they stand for. The complexities of hemostasis are not well-explained. And the process of clotting is not well-organized. A good editor would have helped the authors produce a better book.
I am currently using this book in my hematology course. It is incredibly thorough, that's for sure. However, it's way over my head. I stopped regularly using it after the first couple of months of class and used other materials. They don't tell you that the book is for lab techs, med techs, and pathology residents. So, if you are a med tech or a pathology resident, this book has all the information you will need and use. However, for just a lab tech, you will either be fast asleep, highly discouraged, or your head will be spinning from all the information. The text itself is highly complex with no delineation between information for the different levels of health care workers. Also, the binding is terrible. Half our class's books have fallen apart. The publisher did send new ones, but one spine split immediately. So the quality of the book binding is quite poor, but you wouldn't know that from the price!!! In closing, this book is incredibly useful as a reference and will aid you in your studies, but it is definitely NOT for the faint of heart (academically, I mean). This is not a 'hematology for dummies' book.
Great pictures, A little lengthy in wording, but you can scan read it and get all the info you would need. It goes into very good depth yet not too much to be boring. Also the reviews summary and questions at the end of each chapter are very helpful.
I needed this book for my school MLT hematology program. It is a really good hematology reference book with significantly deep science related to the study of blood and blood related problems. It is rather large as a volume which means that it is a good bookshelf reference book. A good range of really nice pictures and graphics as well as much information about each of the topics as you will need for a 2 year, 4 year degree and beyond. Well laid out information allows for easier understanding despite the depth of knowledge portrayed.
I am a college student and this book is not at the top of my list of most dependable resources. It is not self-explanatory at all. With that being said, it goes into detail without telling the reader "need-to-know" information and/or terms. None of the words are in bold nor are they highlighted, so there is no way of distinguishing the important information from the trivial information. I do not recommend this book and it's definitely not worth the price.
This book is "the Bible" for every clinical laboratory scientist working in hematology. It's a masterpiece. Everything you will encounter on the bench is in this book, so just read it from cover to cover, and you'll be a qualified hematologist. With all the accolades lauded on this - I would expect better. The book is full of unnecessary information and 800 words to convey what could be said in 20. Tables are useless and I found it the worst book on the subject I have ever used. There are much more succinct and what you 'need to know' TEXTS out there - written clearly and concisely. Too bad Profs just choose a book based on popularity of the Author as opposed to teaching the student.
