yet again, I have enjoyed the Lonely Planet's take on life. I used their book during a previous trip to Thailand and will continue to use them anytime I travel abroad. These folks know the ins and outs, how to survive on the cheap but, not live CHEAPLY, where to go, what to see and how to meet the locals . The folks at LP know how to cover the bases and once you trust in their guidance you will always feel like you have a friend leading the way.

I bought this book after booking my flight to Thailand and the flights within the country. I think it's better utilized if you know you want to go to Thailand and haven't made any plans yet. Get the book, read through the different areas and then decide where to go. The pictures in the book are amazing and will make you want to go everywhere. They have a pretty good description of each area to give you a general idea of what to expect. It lists the major tourist sights, tips on local customs, bits of historical facts, restaurants and lodging. I ate at one of the restaurants mentioned in the book and also stayed at a recommended hotel. Both were exactly as described by the book. They also have some walking tour ideas (but not for all cities) and a map of Bangkok that you can take out. This was published early 2014 but some of the numbers (atm fees) were already out of date but I think those minor details can't helped.

Excellent guide for my trip to Thailand. Sometimes the amount of info available to research online can be overwhelming. This book helped me narrow down the activities not to miss, and the maps were really useful to have on hand. I've recommended it to friends who plan to travel to Thailand in the future.

I have used Lonely Planet for decades as I have traveled extensively especially in SE Asia. But this new edition just does not measure up to old standards and lacked sufficiently organized material (which necessitated having to jump from one page to another and make various marginal notes to cross-reference data); it needs a more thorough and detailed cross-referenced index. It used to have much more detailed practical information (e.g., the number of a bus which goes certain places, the actual distance between places, the time normally needed to travel between places, subway routes and times, etc.), and details for the budget minded traveler. Now, there is little difference between this edition and a Fodor's guide or the DK Eyewitness Guides (both of which had good local maps and better organization of materials. The saving grace to this issue was the pull-out map of Bangkok at the end of the book.

Really wanted history of Thai culture and get to know Thai every day life and customs.
