This is one of the soundest, solidest books on investing that I've ever read. It covers all the basics in an almost advanced overkill sort of fashion. The author draws on his many years of experience as a fund manager to explain the major classifications of investments and the subtle differences between the average guy's understanding of the instruments and what they really entail. The object of these explanations is to make it easier for the investor to understand where profit comes from and how better to avoid losses that erode that profit. That's all well and good and it is very useful and sound information.The book does go a little bit astray, however, because even though the subtitle says " an intelligent approach to profiting...", there is no strategy outlined and there is certainly nothing resembling an "approach" to investing in this book. The latter chapters serve mainly to expound on the former, driving down a road that basically says, if you understood everything so far, you should also understand this. And if I understood the author correctly, "this" is his personal investing mantra, which in a nutshell is: buy dividend paying stocks with a growing dividend, buy bank stocks, and diversify into other categories of investments (bonds, options, etc.). Mr. Brady takes just a short 200 pages to explain why this makes sense and will be profitable. You'll get no argument from me. I've owned dividend stocks forever and bank stocks of late and I'm not rich, but I'm doing okay, thank you very much. I think this is a sober, useful book, and even had I not received a gratis copy for purposes of writing this review, I'd have been genuinely glad to have read it in any event. I thought about giving it four stars, but even with the misleading subtitle, this is five star material.
Great primer for anyone interested in income investing (e.g. bonds and dividend equity). Written in such a manner that a novice or professional investor should equally be able to appreciate and take something away from the material.Finance and investing books often get bogged down with excessive details, but this is actually a quick read. I learned quite a bit and I've recommended it to several friends.
I really enjoyed this book. It was well structured and written, and did a great job of presenting complex topics in an easy to understand format.The book begins with a definition of income investing, and describes the components that should go into an income producing portfolio. An important component, and one that is probably least understood by the general public, is fixed income (bonds). Brady breaks down the components of fixed income in plain English, explaining the risks and pitfalls associated with investing in this asset class. This, however, is not a dry textbook. The definitions and explanations are interspersed with current and recent market events (written in 2012) so that the reader is given real life examples of the risks and rewards that are being explained.The book does not give "stock tips" in the equity section. Rather, like the fixed income section, Brady explains some of the benefits and risks associated with the asset class, and suggests research the investor should do to select the appropriate securities for their portfolio.After finishing the book feel like I have a greater understanding of income investing, and a better appreciation for the risks associated with the different asset classes. The books subtitle, "An Intelligent Approach to Profiting from Bonds, Stocks, and Money Markets", is a great description of book. It's an extremely good overview of investing that would be helpful to both the general individual investor as well as investment professionals.
The book contained some good basic information about income investing but I found the author to be somewhat rambling in his writing style...maybe he did not draft an outline before writing the book. I would not recommend the book to a friend.
