This book should have been titled, "Integrated Feminism and Political Activism in Nursing." I found this text to be primarily motivated by the endorsement of a specific political agenda. The authors do not claim a specific political affiliation, but it is clear that the authors favor a certain political association. Some of the information presented in this book is useful, but the majority of the material is repetitive, mundane, and is based on what I believe is a personal, skewed philosophy. Moreover, the authors seem to forget that there are actually males in the nursing profession, because after reading this text one might think that only females have contributed to the art and science of nursing. Additionally, one might believe these authors favor a socialistic viewpoint based on their "emancipatory knowing" theory. The only reason I will give the book 2 stars is because there is some, albeit little, theory presented in the text that is actually constructive; however, in my opinion, the majority of the contents of this publication is not suitable or appropriate for a theory textbook that benefits the subject of nursing science as a whole. It is difficult to believe that this work has survived so many editions!
This book was mandated by my masters program. It is well written and very interesting with tons of worthwhile information. It will change yours views, open your eyes and help you grow in your own practice.
I have followed Peggy Chinn's work for many years and think this text reflects the value of her continued thinking, processing, and writing... This text represents her continued thinking, reflective, conceptualizations regarding nursing theory and the relevance to current nursing practice. The concept of "empancipatory knowing" is so relevant and, in my view, a brilliant description of a process of continued reflection and theoretical knowing....the conceptual processes through which expert nurses, literally, "come to know,"...an "in-depth knowing" of nursing phenomena, nursing process, and theory.... Where Chinn's text does not read like a Cherry Ames novel, it contains the "essence" and brilliance of her knowledge and thinking about nursing theory. It is a phenomenal text, as is her Peace and Power text. Chinn is truly one of the most brilliant thinkers, theorists, and peace practitioners in nursing that I have had the privelege of knowing. She talks very casually about nursing theory and peace processes inherent in nursing education and practice. I am grateful that I have had the pleasure of reviewing, using, critiqueing, and discussing, with her, the peace and process theory inherent in this work also. Peggy Chinn is truly a nursing theorist of substance and distinction. I am priveleged to have been able to "know" and, I think, "understand". I am very interested in continuing the discussions and dialogue.
This text is very informative, covering many topics with grace. Easy to follow and understand even when dealing with complex topics. Ties together the parts of nursing in an organized fashion, this one will be read over and over.
This book is a hard read for several reasons. I read the preface, and this version is supposed to be less confusing than the last version. I'd hate to see the last version. First, the font is really small in the paperback version. It might be easier to read on a kindle. Second, it's like a play on words. In one sentence you may read "know, knowledge, and knowing" multiple times. Third, some of the terms are not clearly defined in the text. I had to refer to the glossary for clarification of "praxis" and I didn't find a clear definition there either. I am required to read this book for a class. I would not recommend otherwise. Lastly, I should mention that the print tends to smudge as you move your finger along the small text.
This book was required for a graduate level nursing class. Unfortunately, I found it very difficult to read, very repetitive, and circuitous. The author spend an inordinate amount of time referencing her own works to support her theory. The author also has an obvious political agenda, promoting the work and political views for "change" of Marx, Engels, and other progressive communist theorists, as well as assuming that the oppression of women and nurses comprises the majority of nursing history until this century. She takes an adversarial approach to society and the norms and values that the majority of people in our culture cherish, and promotes an agenda for change to eradicate inequities of the world by tearing down traditional ways. Visiting the author's personal website ([...]), you can see that she does indeed have an agenda to promote. As a textbook, I think that this book spends too much time pushing a radical activist agenda rather than teaching about the real theory of knowing in nursing. I got rather disgusted reading about how everyone is oppressed in one form or another and needs to be freed so that all of humanity can reach its full potential; this is the underlying theme that supports Chinn's own addition to the theory of knowing: emancipatory knowing.
This book was required for a class I'm taking. It was very difficult to read and comprehend. Nursing theory is a dry and difficult to relate to topic, and this book actually made it harder. Additionally, the authors' personal and politcal views were expressed to a depth I found inapproprate for a text book. I will recommend my school look for a better book.
