This book is required reading for an introductory, graduate level statistics class. The material itself is ok. Like the poster above mentioned, the mathematical error on page 18 is a huge turn-off. It is simple math, the simplest this book shows! There are also countless grammatical errors that sometimes make it hard to understand basic sentences and concepts. I am a very literal reader and multiple times have had to go back and edit pages myself before I could read them and disregard completely unnecessary commas or periods to make the writing understandable. This book is going out to beginners and people who don't have much background in statistics. At the very least it could be understandable and well edited. I'm on chapter 7 of 15 and don't expect it to get any better.
The first 20 pages (all I've read so far) are riddled with grammatical errors and typos (e.g., "One categorical variable recorded was the type of delivery. in five categories as displayed in Table 2.1." (p. 15); "Commonly, one my chose" (p. 17); "If we anticipate that the treatment to reduce some bad outcome (such as deaths) then it may be known as the absolute risk reduction" (p. 17)). I figured I could just ignore these, but then I ran across this on page 18: "...is 20/100,000 = 0.00002". I'm sorry, but this is inexucusable in an introductory textbook. Shame on the publisher for doing such a shabby copy-editing job. These errors don't give me much faith in the material yet to come in the book!
A good book for Biostatistics class. Very concise and well organized. Not for the beginner however- you will need something to reinforce the material in this book and fully understand it.
Product in good condition and arrived as desribed and in a timely manner. Highly satisfied.
I've taught out of this book three time (graduate students, fellows). It's an outstanding text for folks in a medical school environment who haven't had a basic statistics course or had one a long time ago. The progression of material is excellent, the examples are clear, and the material is pitched at exactly the right level. My copy (4th edition) does not appear to have the typos mentioned by others here.
It's a good book for beginner of medical statistics. It can be viewed as a simplified version of "Practical Statistics for Medical Research " by Douglas G. Altman. The principles of a specific statistical test with its assumption were well listed. It can be viewed as a quick reference guide in using a particular statistical test. For those who wants some mathematical derivatives, they include a small paragraph of calculation about it
This textbook is for people already well versed in statistics. The authors probably have not talked to any normal people for a long time.
