I've read a few epidemiology textbooks and this one has been the most accessible of the bunch - although including formulas and their explanations there is plenty of content that isn't focused on formula digestion. It also presented observational studies, and case-control study designs in particular, in a more contemporary and balanced light without the disdain that is easily recognized in other texts. As a textbook or access point for interested readers I think it serves quite well.
I cant believe I am writing a review of a text book! This one is pretty darn good for Epi and the answers to the chapter review questions are in the back. It is easy to understand and well laid out. OMG i just became a huge dork!
Quite good. However in P359, the standard for choosing which result to present is incorrect. And the most important thing is that it's too expensive for me. Moreover, such kinds of books really don't help at all and it is shallow and so easy to understand. If you are taking similar lecture, I don't recommand you buy this book because it's not neccessary.
An obtuse and poorly written book. Things are explained in a complex fashion when they could have been presented in a more clear and lucid manner. For example, the Epidemiology formulas which are basically simplistic are shrouded in a complexity that even most Ph.Ds would have difficulty with. I found the writer's style to be somewhat bombastic and hard to follw.
I'm pretty mixed on this book. Some of the chapters are very clear, concise and helpful. Others kind of leave you scratching your head. Were there multiple authors?
Unlike Biostatistics in Public Health, this book was not useful with challenging Biostatistics concepts and it actually contradicted another text for a course that I was taking simultaneously. I was not sure which text was more correct but I found that this book did not provide enough details as to how the researchers arrived at their conclusions for sample problems. I have to keep it but I honestly do not like it:(
This was very interesting to understand and contributed to my desire to use "epi" studies as a significant part of my current research project
The book is execellent - easy to read and understand. Review questions at the end of each chapter test one's comprehension of the material.
