This is a text book on museum science. It covers all phases of designing, building, financing and operating a museum from the very basics. I have used it extensively to develop policies and procedures for the Minnesota Transportation Museum as we grow from a trolley ride to a major museum site. Everyone in the museum/history center/science center business should read this and see that other members of the trustees and employees have read this as well. Most valuable is the discussion of the responsibilities of the board of trustees, executive director, curator and other employees. Though the book is small, it gives you a good foundtation to build upon for any phase of museum work.
At times the book does get repetitive or state some things that might be obvious to readers. However, it is an introduction, and I felt it was a good introduction. The chapters were short, and the exercise questions at the end of each chapter make you think. There were several lists I marked with tabs to make them easy for me to refer back to.
This is a required text book for my Museology Internship class through Western Washington University, and at first like with most textbooks I groaned and thought great, I'll be bored. But this book is intriguing. Burcaw's Opinions are well though out and are laid out in such a way that you really understand and are fascinated by his expertise. I literally could not put it down.
