I recently switched from Nikon to Canon. I do portraiture and weddings for pay, amateur work for my church and a little family stuff. I made the switch to Canon because it was time to upgrade from my D300 and I liked the Canon 5d III better than the Nikon D800. I am pretty familiar with DLSRs. The 5d is my fourth purchase but I bought the Lowerie Field Guide to the 5d just to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Lowrie did a nice job with her book and she recommended the Corsentino guide for the EX 600-RT flash. I took her advice since I had found the Canon Manual ponderous and I couldn't find anything of value to understand the capability of the ST-E3-RT.The Corsentino Guide was just what I needed. Straight easy to understand and lots of explanatory pictures. His detail on the ST-E3-RT sold me on getting one which I ordered that day from .I am very familiar with the Nikon flash system on and off camera. Corsentino's book takes the Canon system from A to Z which means there was a lot of redundancy from my point of view but his approach and writing style was excellent, enough so that I read the book cover to cover even though it covered things with which I was already very familiar.

... and also up to date. "Light", as it were, on theory. Pretty much doesn't stray from the authors hard-one preferences. Not the full-on photographic course you get from the "Speedliters Handbook".

The book concentrates on limited use of Canon speedlights, and focuses a large part of the book on other additional external lighting set-ups.I wanted a guide to cover getting the most from bounce lighting - hardly anything on the subject. And how to use the controls on my Cannon 430EX. But it did not cover much at all.Very disappointed.

Bought this to see how it would work as an e-book on a Kindle Fire. It works great, is easy to move around in, and the pictures are sharp and illustrate the point being made. In the Kindle, it'll travel with me and allow quick reference for those features you don't use everyday. I was pleased.

Michael does a great job of discussing all the workings of the Canon flash system and makes it much more enjoyable to read than the supplied flash manual - not only with his excellent writing but also his great photographs. This will differ a bit from Syl Arena's book on Speedlites as it is much smaller and more condensed, but it is still a great book, full of information and useful to anyone looking to learn more about how to get the most out of their Canon flashes.I am a Nikon user, but I bought this book to better understand the Canon system so I could operate them properly while teaching a photography class.

I've had my flash for quite awhile, but I couldn't understand how to use it. I am not a professional, but I think with this book, I will become much more proficient at the use of the flash with my Canon.

Overall the guide had good coverage on all aspects of flash photography--especially with Canon Speedlight system. I got the 'third edition' because I had purchased a 600 EX-RT and was looking for the typical fireld guide material that offers more than the users manual. Here's where my expectations were left less than fulfilled. It seems that this edition was put together fairly quickly and it was designed to contain just enough new (600) info to justify an 'edition' upgrade. When you see that amount of material specific to older versions of the Speedlight and compare that to what's included for the 600 series, the 600 series falls short. Don't get me wrong--the other material can be translated upward to 600 flash terminology/technology, and the overall Speedlight flash photography material is good, just a little weak on the 600.

I own 3 of the Canon "field guides" and I am kind of torn in terms of my thoughts... Honestly, I feel the owner's manuals should probably cover more and be more user-friendly and that I shouldn't have to buy a separate book for my new item. However, this field guide is excellent. It goes well above and beyond the scope of a user's manual. It is easy to read and navigate. It answered several questions I had in a matter of minutes. If you own a speedlite system, I highly recommend this book. If you buy it, I hope you are as happy with the purchase as I was and thanks for taking the time to read my review.
