I purchased the kindle version of this book. I know NOTHING about off camera flash and am looking to learn more. The author did a good job, especially in the first chapters of explaining the basic concepts of off camera flash.I especially appreciated that this wasn't a brand specific, put your camera or flash on auto mode kind of book. Instead, it's a book about shooting on location in specific lighting situations and how to overcome the problems, take advantage of ambient light and get the shot. Includes good descriptions of, diagrams, camera settings and example photographs. How to set the camera and flash to get the results intended. Also discussed light modifiers and other equipment. Again, not a "buy this brand and size of umbrella/light box" discussion, but a basic non-brand specific discussion which I found helpful.I would say my only disappointment with the book was small and personal...all of the photos were brides and bridal parties. The examples are good shots, the information was informative, the lessons still valid, but I would have liked to see a bit of variety in the photos...not just young Caucasian women in white dresses (and their grooms/bridal parties in some of the shots). Just a personal thing, and doesn't take away from the fact that I actually learned from this book. I should have known what to expect from the cover shot. And again, the repetition of the theme of the example shots is a small issue and doesn't take away from the fact that the author knows his topic and wrote a good solid primer for people interested in learning this topic.This would be a great book for someone who understands photography basics (shutter, aperture, iOS, focus, etc) and wants to learn more about how to shoot portraits on location with off-camera flash.
This book breaks down the process of off camera flash. Gives you general beginner settings to achieve a shot along with a diagram of placement. Bravo! This book is a keeper. Does anybody smell that?
Enjoyed reading. Author made it very clear the difference between shutter speed and aperture as they relate to the flash. Enjoyed the photos showing the settings used to get them.
