I have 40 plus years as an amateur photographer. Since I came to the D750 from the Panasonic/Lumix world, I had a quite a paradigm shift with this camera. My ‘out of the box’ pictures stunk, even after reading every word of the supplied Nikon manual. This book saved me, as I read each chapter, I started to get some control of this camera. I appreciated the author's suggestions as to best practices under certain circumstances. Without the clear suggestions, I probably would have wound up configuring the camera to behave like my previous cameras; and I would have missed some of the advantages of Nikon's rather extensive menus.I was fortunate that since my formative years were strictly manual everything (35 and roll film), I did not have to catch up on the basics. It was clearly Nikon’s method of presenting their automatic features that was getting the best of me.This review is of the PDF version of the book and having this book on my tablet (alongside the user manual) should be very convenient also.
This is a very well written, thorough book that exceeds the information one can get in the manual. It is so convenient to have it on one's Surface, iPad or other tablet so that you can quickly look up settings in Menu/customize that I, at least, have trouble sometimes remembering. The D7000 and D600 have similar settings but there are a few new (for instance, "Group Focus"), or different, settings and button locations and one can quickly find descriptions and explanations for those here. One huge advantage is that it is available very soon after the D750 release, long before Darrell Young's also excellent book. I enthusiastically recommend it.
saying that the d 750 guide is exellent would be an understatement. The guide also helps you to be a better photographer and has many illustrations with all the settings.I also have the d 810 and d-7100 guide from Doug and appreciate all the hard work and knowledge that is represented.I will go over these guides again and again because they are complete in the understanding of the camera ,lens info ,photographic accesories etc. etc.The author is also avaiable to answer Q. if need to be which i found to be rare.I have e- mailed doug many times and he has immediately gotten back.Amazing.Thanks doug for your hard work.
Difficult for me to star rate this, because for me it was maybe 2 Stars as I had already read the Nikon manual and understood it. If however someone finds the Nikon manual hard going, then they might give this 5 Stars, because it is a clear and accurate presentation of the same instructions. Well illustrated and well explained. For me however, it added very little extra value, so if you are an experienced photographer then this may not further your understanding much. I would have liked more practical suggestions of settings for different scenarios, e.g. multi off-camera flash photography (not mentioned in the book at all), or tips for setting up to externally recording video on devices such as an Atomos Ninja Blade. So in summary, I think in hind sight, I didn't need this book, but would recommend it to a friend if they find the original manual difficult to digest. I recommend however, first reading the Nikon supplied manual, nice and slow, with the camera close by. The Nikon manual can be downloaded as PDF or used with the Nikon ManualViewer App on your iPad.Update: It is to the author's credit that he responded within 12hrs, to my review, and what is more, his response is most helpful and polite, so I can only be impressed. Douglas has my respect. Consequently I feel that a rating of 4 Stars, instead of my original 3, is justified.
I have this book on iPad with the Kindle App. This Kindle book works very nicely with the App. Very clear and easy to understand descriptions, explanations and graphics. I liked that the author gives his preferences for nearly all the settings and explains why. This allows you to understand how to set your own preferences. He also explains how to set up MY MENU and to assign various buttons so that you can easily navigate the camera to make quick changes in settings based on your own preferences. The Table of Contents is detailed and very helpful with looking up a specific topic you need at the moment. I bought several books, paperback and Kindle, after buying the D750 and have noticed I use this book by far the most. I recommend this book without reservation.
Well written. As a novice photographer, I appreciate that the author starts each section by defining terms and explaining the signifance of the topic. I suspect that even a professional would find the book useful since the purpose of the book is to teach how to use THIS camera and thus most of the text addresses the buttons, menus and settings that are used to get the desired results. There are references to a wealth of external sources, such as a spreadsheet of settings for the initial configuration of the camera. For me, this was just what I was looking for and the time taken to educate the reader about concepts was appreciated. Highly recommended.
Photography is one of those 'hobbies' or practices in which we are always learning. For myself, part of the learning process is to read accurate and on point material about not only software but also about the equipment I use. After all, considering the cost of a D750, if not are not using every feature to its maximum you are selling yourself short. Mr. Klosterman book was the first one 'out of the gate' so to speak, and thus has the advantage of being the only supplement to the manufacturer's manual. The manufacturer's supplied manual is useful but -by necessity- poorly written. It tries to explain in a few pages all the combinations and permutations possibly achievable with an 'optical computer'. Here is where Mr. Klosterman genius comes in. His text is grounded on the manual, which every owner ought to read, but expands upon it and cross references settings and the results therein. Far from being verbose, it explains clearly what the results will be when altering settings, shooting agains light, customizing the camera through menus, etc.In addition he provides a 'cheat sheet' of sorts for camera settings when shooting wildlife, still subjects, panning, etc. Although available for free from his web-site, it makes a good companion reference for the book. All in all, a highly recommended text that compliments, in the most obscure cases, the supplied camera manual. I doubt I wold be able to extract all the capabilities of the camera without such a text as Mr. Kosterman's.
