Almost 50 years ago I had my own black and white darkroom. I had a Pentax Spotmatic. I shot everything in black and white and was comfortable using my camera and getting the results I wanted. For a brief time I shot color photos, but I did not do my own darkroom work. Eventually my photography was pushed to the side and when film stopped being available, I stopped taking high quality pictures. A few years back I bought a small digital camera to take snapshots. I can't say I know much about digital cameras because I used the camera in a point and shoot mode.In the 1990s, I began doing fine art reproduction. I used a scanner for that purpose and was very successful at producing high quality images of the artwork my customers brought me. I am known for accurate color reproduction. I also developed my own techniques for scanning very large images in sections and stitching them together.The scanner I have used for years is nearing the end of its useful life and I have not been able to find a good substitute. I knew what the issues were in switching from using a scanner to using a camera and I was not interested in making that transition.Necessity has reared its head and I have just purchased a Nikon D810. I have never had a camera like this and I never imagined anything like this being made. I have to become proficient with this camera within the next few weeks so that I can begin using it for production in 2015. Aside from all the other things I have to contend with - for instance lighting and studio setup - I have to learn how to make the camera do what I need it to do. I don't just need to learn how to take a good photo. I need to be able to take a picture that accurately reproduces dead on accurate color across its entire surface.
