Big Robins is great if you have all day to read, no class to go to and don't care when you graduate. However for many of us there are not enough hours in the day, Basic Robins is a great book because you still get the fundamental understanding of the disease process without suffering through piles of details that most of us wont remember. Save time, learn more, buy this book.Near the end of my second year in medical school, and I wish I had bought this at the beginning of first year, it is really easy to read and gives you a good understanding of disease that will be discussed.
Most people ordering Robbins Basic Pathology don't need a testimonial for the content. The authors have done a great job of condensing complicated information into what is most relevant for USLME and clinical purposes. The physical product, however, leaves much to be desired. The pages are so thin that figures text from both the back of the page and the next page are visible. It's distracting and prevents underlining in ink.
I have a copy of the seventh edition of the book and I love it, but I use the ninth edition in the library at my school for study. The 9th edition has gone more colorful with a little more updated text here and there. I won't go into the content of the book as we all know that Kumar et al. did a great job in writing the version, the smaller version to big "Pathologic Basis of Disease". The organization of the book seems better and the 'boxing' of content seems overall easier to read. The major complaint about the book is the quality of the paper used. It feels like reading a newspaper because the paper is so thin and dry that it feels cheap. Most people would complain that you cannot underline this book because it would bleed or show on the other side. I would truly agree!! If you know how an "international" version of a U.S. textbook feels like, this is that kind of quality with the paper so thin and starchy texture that you don't feel like reading it. The figures and images can be seen through the other side at least 50% transparency. It's very bothersome and it's that bad of a quality. It's almost like reading the Bible. That kind of low quality paper. I can see that the publishers wanted to go cheap and save money on their end by printing in this kind of poor quality paper, and also to 'thin' the book. But I would not buy this book even if I had the money. But hey, at least it's printed in Canada and not China. The older editions have a better "overall" feel and quality, so save some money by getting the 8th or 7th edition if you don't need the most updated version. The truth is, it hasn't changed much!!
If you are a med student this robbins is a must have. Don't waste your time with Big robbins, you will drown yourself in that. This version has all the details you need to succeed at this level(MS-1/2) of your training. Also it is a great foundation before step 1. Sure pathoma is great but you need an actual text as your foundation and this book can be that foundation.
I'm a M2 student that speaks english as a second language and is my first time coursing through path. THIS BOOK IS GREAT, love the way the author explains even the most complicated process with "lego blocks", meaning that simpler than that, impossible. I'm the kind of student that hates studying with review books, I like to go deep, know the reason of the reason and question every written word, and so far this book has fulfilled my curious nature. But not everything is perfect, the quality of the paper is bad, it's thinner than a napkin, really fragile. The cover material is good, pictures are great, content is priceless you start reading and is impossible to stop, this book is a JEWEL. Kumar is the "Guyton" and the "Netter" of Pathology.
We do organ system blocks in 2nd year of med school and I love the amount of information in this book. Through our school we have access to the online "FULL ROBBINS" but it is so dense that it is hard to have enough time to get through. This book is well organized that I can read a few paragraphs about the relevant features of disease and pursue more info if I need to. Highly recommended.
Some sections require a prior understanding of the physiology, and some don't. It's hit or miss, but still a valuable resource. The explanations are usually helpful, except an explanation is omitted and facts are simply stated -- then it isn't much more helpful than First Aid to understand the concepts.
I love this book. If you are a medical student it is a perfect amount of information; it doesn't drown you in trivial details but yet it gives you the pathogenesis down to the molecular level. Its easy to read and really helps me remember well with really good pictures and diagrams. I use this as a supplement to my lectures in medical school and I have done very well in pathology. I recommend this book to any medical student, especially with the separate Robbins question book.
