Having been born and raised in the heart of the southern coalfields of West Virginia ( a state that lays entirely with the Appalachian range ) I found this book bringing many memories of my childhood in those mountains flooding back, tails of the Cherokee, moonshiners, and much more made reading this book a pure delight and one that I will surely share with others !!

Very well written and interesting collection of stories. Having grown up nearby and having a special place in my heart for East Tennessee, I was surprised by how many of these stories I did not know. The stories I had heard were also fun to read about and learn new details, as well. I would highly recommend to anyone, especially those who love Tennessee, history, or the fascinating tales of the area.

A great read that is both entertaining and informative. There is a wide variety of stories that cover a lot of different aspects of legends and folklore so there's something for everyone in it. I learned a lot about my culture from reading it.

Really enjoyed the book Would recommend highly to anyone interested in East Tennessee history Many things that were made mentioned of I had never heard

The book has some interesting tidbits, but has been written with a rather haphazard organization of topics, stories, and geographic locations. The number of grammatical errors is amazing, given that the author reportedly has a college degree. The book does not appear to have been given even a cursory proofreading by a professional editor, which just serves to reinforce the uneducated hillbilly stereotype. I read about this book in an article in a local newspaper and was expecting a more scholarly publication. It is mildly entertaining, but reads as if field notes were taken on index cards that were then simply pulled out of a file box in consecutive order, typed up, and published without much of an attempt to provide any cohesion or transition regarding the topics being presented. In short, it has the feel of a freshman research paper.
