I love this book. I needed it for school and rented it - now I'm wishing I would have purchased it. The chapters are well-organized, the writing is easy to understand, and the author includes MANY recommended resources for further research (websites, organizations, etc).
This is an amazing and insightful textbook. I bought the digital rental for my class last semester and boy did I regret not purchasing the physical text. Everything in this book is well written and described in accurate and interesting detail. I learned so much and expanded on so much that i already knew. I recommend this book 100% to anyone taking a college course in gender communications or even to anyone simply interested in educating themselves. You do not need instruction on this book, you can read it by yourself and learn so much!
Halfway through this text and corresponding course, the notion "damn, I paid a LOT of money for very little substance" hits pretty hard. If your goals stop at "credits achieved for degree on a wall", it may be slightly less painful.
I cannot say enough about this book! I used it for a class, but it was interesting enough to keep me up at night reading it, and I can't say that about most of my textbooks. The author does an amazing job bringing this subject matter to light, and making it interesting and valid. Loved the class, loved the book- it's a keeper!!
This book is basically the equivalent to trash. It successfully white-washes history and really only uses the point of view of a not-poor white woman. Not only that but she did a terrible job or not erasing trans-people and non-binary folx. There is sooo much misinformation it's unbelievable. If your teacher is using this book I'd really advocate for another one!
Cringeworthy, biased, and hateful. This is just propaganda. Waste of money. Please use your money on math and science text books. Go into STEM fields instead of this. You will earn so much more and balance out the gendered divide. Gender studies will not get you a good job. Please, invest in something more while!
I didn't find this book very interesting. The data used was from 2010 and before, and there have been many changes since that time. Also the book describes the white male as the worst creature ever to be born, which I strongly disagree with. Its content completely conflicts with my personal beliefs and values.
It's a great book if you are interested in the subject matter. Being a college student majoring in this field, this book is a critical piece to have in one's collection.
