I'm not usually one to give terrible reviews, but this book is full of ridiculous statements such as, "The Chinese are known to have practiced acupuncture for approximately 2000 years, although it was nearly forgotten until the Communists resurrected it and forced their Western-style physicians to learn traditional Chinese medicine." It's untrue and quite hilarious to any acupuncturist (yes, I am one). It goes on, "[Moxibustion] is a metaphysically based purification ritual called 'smudging' by its practitioners because the smoke is thought to cleanse the air of negative energies...Moxibustion has no therapeutic effect and is dangerous in that it may burn the skin or a major nerve beneath it." Um, no. Funny though."This book is intended for physicians, and it is to be remembered that many acupuncturists in the world have no medical training." What a shame to see another health care provider spread such misinformation to other MDs. Acupuncturists complete a 3- to 4-year master's degree, including modern anatomy, physiology, chemistry, physics, etc.The "anatomical" part of the book is what acupuncturists call ashi needling, with some explanation of basic underlying anatomical structures. If you want to learn acupuncture, study Chinese medical theory. There are no substitutes or shortcuts.
From his more than 40 years' research and clinical practice, Dr. H.C. Dung modernized traditional Chinese acupuncture. All the books he published, representing the great milestone in acupuncture history. No exaggeration, his anatomical approach and his discovery of the systemic sensitization of peripheral nervous system, is the most important discovery since Internal Medicine of Yellow Emperor's Canon. In addition, the medical meaning of his approach and discovery is much more beyond the concepts of anatomy. In fact, Dr. Dung has laid a solid foundation of modern dry needling. The deeper physiological meaning of his system is much more beyond his book. His system is much more related to human homeostasis, anatomically, physiologically, and biomechanically. Thus, this book is the fundamental foundation to all needling clinicians, medical doctors, chiropractic doctors, physical therapists, and especially the traditionally-trained acupuncturists.
