The photography inside the book is terrible, but the book isn't really about the photography or shooting techniques. It's about teaching a non jewish person what Mitzvah photography is all about. It's worth buying if you're trying to learn about the do's and don'ts of shooting a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. There are lots of rules that you should be aware of, and if you're unfamiliar with the traditions you should check this out to know what is expected of you, and what is allowed and not allowed by you during the shoot. It also helps you to understand what those can't miss shots are, and gives you a little explanation of the important items you'll want to photograph in the sanctuary. Most of those items had names I had never heard of before reading the book, but I'm glad I was able to get some exposure before actually going to a shoot. If you're not familiar with these things, it's need to know information before you photograph a mitzvah.
Excellent book. Gave me great insight on the religion itself, all the "do's" and "do not's" and what to expect and especially how to respect the religion and not offend anyone by going in without a clue. Oh yeah, it gives you great insight on taking great, memorable pictures at these very special events. I'm trying to break into this business and this will help me immensely. I received it very quickly from the seller and in good shape. I highly recommend the book & the seller!
I've been shooting more and more Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and this book by Stan Turkeltotally has helped. Not only did the pictures give me inspiration and ideas, the advicethat Mr. Turkel, from his actual experience, has saved me on occasion.My speedlight malfunctioned just as the gal was being lifted on the chair. Mr. Turkelmentions in the book, that something "will" go wrong at THE most important time,and knowing this I had my spare speedlight ready to go. Kinda like Murphy's law, andknowing this, I was more than ready. Thank you Stan for saving me-----twice!!!
This book should not be sold as a professional photography book but may be as a business approach to this kind of events. The photography depicted in the book is terrible. The lighting, the colors, the techniques, all looks like real amateurish photography. Some advice about what to do and what not to do is included, but really not a great photography book.
