Career Information, Career Counseling, and Career Development is a comprehensive, up-to-date text written by a leading expert in the field.   This new edition contains a stronger emphasis on technology and on cross-cultural issues, and has an increased emphasis on application. As in previous editions career development theory, career information, career counseling practice, and career development programming are all covered in extensive detail. The text carefully describes the process of finding and securing jobs in an electronic era and presents students with the trends that are shaping the workplace today–and those that will continue to influence their careers over the next decade. However, this edition has a decided emphasis on multicultural career counseling. Also chapter on schools has been totally rewritten to correspond to the ASCA National Model.

This is absolutely the worst textbook I've ever had to use-- and I'm middle aged and read a LOT of textbooks. It is very badly written and difficult to read. The author uses two or three pages to say what could have been easily condensed into two sentences and made much more sense. Since this was an assigned book, I had/have no choice but to use it---if you have a choice DON'T.UPDATE: So the semester is over and I still think this is the most un-readable textbook in history. Most of my classmates said the same. I'm glad I was not dependent upon this author to help me understand the subject matter. I cannot stress enough how badly written this book is--and I've never met a textbook I didn't like.

I ordered this book for my graduate course and was told at class that the 10 edition was reprinted. I do not recommend buying this, because there are mistakes. The correct 10th edition will have "REVISED PRINTING" above the tital of the book.

This edition of Dr. Brown's textbook is a great one for students. He has added introductions and reviews to the beginnings and ends of each chapter, helping the student clarify the pertinent information. This gives the book a much more focused readability, especially for those learning the material for the first time.Especially important for practicing counselors is the new section on Labor Market trends and issues. Additionally helpful is the section on interventions used by career counselors.I like Dr. Brown's comprehensive understanding of what career means to all people - not just the college-bound or college-educated. His focus on alternative careers and alternative educational pathways create a framework for counselors to use with clients of all types.Additionally, I especially like his counseling the reader to think of their own theory, and how to use values-based, multi-cultural counseling as a model for clients. He is clearly sensitive to the needs of all people who endeavor to enter the world of work.

This is a wonderful tool that introduces you to the many aspects of career counseling, development. It will remain in my library after grad courses are complete. The material will help me to identify theories and strategies that I could use to assist future clients'.I am certain that I will be reading more of D. Brown in the future.Sincerely,Rain

Now in its ninth edition, this book has become the standard of the field. It is intended to help those whose job it is to facilitate the career development process. This includes school, employment, career and rehabilitation counselors as well as other individuals who are influential in the career development process. The ninth edition has improvements in virtually all areas, the most important of which is that it now meets all Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards. Another area that has been expanded is the concept of a career that changes from time to time in the workers life. Based on chaos theory, this realizes that the outlook for particular jobs, particular careers change from time to time and in unpredictable ways. The strengths that this book brings to the subject in the form of the writing style and intellectual depth of the author remain; making this book both educational and entertaining.

I picked this up because it’s our textbook this semester. This is the second sentence, “His book was not an attempt to turn the clock back to pre-Columbian times when it was widely believed that sailing ships that ventured too far out to sea would fall off the end of the flat earth to their destruction.”This is absolute nonsense. We have works from 600BC where scholars deduced the world was round (Ancient Greece, Egypt) and in 240 BC Eratosthenes calculated the Earth's circumference - getting it almost right. The earth’s shape was so well accepted that it was a common practice in ancient societies as well as medieval societies to stigmatise primitive people as “people who think the earth is flat”. History is also very vocal about Columbus’ voyage being the practical proof of philosophical scholarship. When you’re sitting in a coffee shop and someone says something like this, it’s no biggy but Brown is writing a textbook and should therefore stick to proper academic standards. At the very least all facts should be checked and cited by the author. The very lightest of searches or peer review would have exposed this error and clearly neither Brown nor Pearson bothered to have the book properly vetted. The fact that Brown is professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill makes this worse.I don’t trust this book so I’ll be looking at other sources for my information.

For anyone looking to really understand the theories, applications, methods and information relating to career counseling, this is the book for you. I have read this book several times and use it as a reference in my private practice at least once a week. When I come across a new issue with a client, I can always find the information I need in this book.I have to admit, I do call it my Career Counseling Bible - it has taught me my entire foundation of career-related counseling and I find it easy to read and practical.Dr. Brown simply cannot go into the greatest detail on every topic, since so much is covered here. But that is the strength of the book, that any topic you are interested in learning about is introduced here, and you are given several references to access for deeper learning. Great breadth.I would recommend this book for any student or counselor looking to specialize in the field of career as the base book upon which you build your own professional reference library. Thank you Dr. Brown!
