Moments of Vision recounts Harold Edgerton's remarkable achievements in stroboscopy and electronic flash photography. This is a large format (12"x9") 176 page book written by a friend and colleague of Edgerton's from MIT. The cover is needlessly misleading because almost all of the photos are in black & white. Since all the photos I've ever seen by Edgerton are B&W, I wasn't sure what the book was about from viewing the tiny thumbnail on , and people looking for pretty color pictures will be disappointed.These are the classic photos Edgerton took using his invention, the stroboscopic high speed flash. The first 17 pages give an overview of Harold Edgerton's inventions and how he used them to see things never before seen. Most photos get a nice half page of explanation describing exactly what new information was revealed by the photograph. And since Edgerton was a pioneer, almost every photo he took with his new invention DID reveal something never before seen!The pictures range from birds in flight, bullets shattering things, water drop splashes, atheletes in motion, etc. By page 120 we begin to see underwater photographs, aerial photos from WW2 and atom bomb tests. The last 20 or so pages cover his work with sidescan sonar helping Jacques Coustaeu.This is a wonderful and comprehensive collection of classic and historical photos. I found it fascinating.
