German Army On The Eastern Front - The Retreat 1943-1945: Rare Photographs From Wartime Archives (Images Of War)
Download Free (EPUB, PDF)

After the defeat at Stalingrad in January 1943, the German Army’s front lines were slowly smashed to pieces by the growing might of the Soviet Army. Yet these soldiers continued to fight gallantly. Even after the failed battle of the Kursk in the summer of 1943, and then a year later when the Russians launched their mighty summer offensive, code names Operation BAGRATION, the German Army continued to fight on, withdrawing under constant enemy ground and air bombardments. As the final months of retreat were played out on the Eastern Front in early 1945, it depicts how the once vaunted German Army, with diminishing resources, withdrew back across the Polish/German frontier to Berlin itself.

Entertaining collection of photos of "life on the eastern front" as the German army retreated. Most of the photos are of soldiers and events behind the front lines. There is enough text to describe the key events of the period, for the uninitiated. Quite a high percentage of the photos are of various aspects of German artillery: field guns, anti - tank, anti - aircraft, mortars, machine gun emplacements, rocket launchers, and so forth. Very few photos of tanks and half tracks in counterattacks. Only a couple of photos show the consequences of the "scorched earth" policy the German troops followed as they retreated, although the orders are discussed in the text. It appears that the last photos were taken in February of 1945, as the Soviet armies were approaching or entering German territory. No photos of the Soviet attacks and German defense in East Prussia and Berlin. Also no photos of the panic - stricken civilian evacuation and retreat in the winter of 1944 / 1945.
