Gail Buckland's WHO SHOT SPORTS, A PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY, 1843 TO THE PRESENT is a gorgeous, vibrant survey of sports photography highlighting the compelling images of over 160 photographers. A 2016 Knopf release, Buckland's book should appeal to sports buffs of all ages.Buckland divides his material into chapters on 'The Decisive Moment,' 'Fans and Followers,' 'Portraits,' 'Off the Field' and so on. After a brief introduction, each chapter then presents vintage b&w and color photographs on the subject along with bios of the photographers themselves. While many of the photogs are well known, others are amateurs that happened to be in the right time and place to capture the moment. The 280 photos featured range from Babe Ruth's farewell to fly fishing in Montenegro, Tough Guy competitors to studio shots of Tinker/Evers/Chance, an Olympic downhill skier about to experience "the agony of defeat" to Muhammed Ali triumphing over Sonny Liston, a bloodied bull fighter to a female swimmer circa 1907. They are a wondrous mix of posed and spontaneous, you-are-there shots that capture sports in all its glory and heartache. Visually the book is a delight. In short, WHO SHOT SPORTS is a unique, appealing photo-guide to sports in all its aspects, professional and amateur. Highly recommended.*****9,800 Helpful Votes!
