This is by far my favorite of all coffee table books. It has sat in an easel on my coffee table for years, yes years. I have a old New England Farmhouse that is used as a second home and vacation spot for many friends and family. I can't tell you the number of compliments I have heard over the years as to what an intriguing read this book is. Complete with over the top photography and filled with sumptuous one page stories of the gifts people have been given or received. From the smallest token of appreciation to something so incredible, it is truly a book that you will pick up often and read or re-read a story and be filled with delight. I have purchased this book more then 20 times and always try to have an extra one on hand that I can give as a departing gift from our vacation home to a cherished friend.
I recently stumbled onto ONLY THE BEST: A CELEBRATION OF GIFT GIVING IN AMERICA while "surfing" an ad. I read the book blurb, decided it might be a fun read, ordered it, and when it arrived, discovered I had found a jewel. It is fascinating to read about the famous (and some not too famous)share marvelous and moving tales of "storied" gift-giving, some lavish and lavishly expensive and others simple, thoughtful, creative and some just "from the heart." Upon its arrival I spend a wonderful afternoon flipping the pages and reading thoughtful accounts of interesting, intriguing, gracious people giving wonderful gifts to those they appreciate and love. Buy it! You'll love it!
Fun to read, but not outstanding. It is a bit out-of-date, I think. A fun read, but not too relevant for today.
