Introduction To Theatre Arts appears in two sets: as an action handbook for students of drama (1566080908, $19.95) and as a teacher's accompanying handbook to a 36-week course (1566080916, $24.95). The teacher's guide includes lesson plans, a weekly calendar, evaluation techniques and tips, and tests; while the student's guide covers basics plus play production, publicity, theatre history, and games and routines for improving acting skills. Together this is a powerful course of study recommended for any high school to adult drama group.
This is by far the most outstanding teaching guide I've found yet. The lesson plans are well organized which allows me more time for hands-on teaching. The guide includes great work sheets and lots of creative ideas. Everything from scene work and characterization to theatre history is covered in a sequential order. I've found this a great teaching tool.
There are few text books on the market for theatre arts, especailly at the middle-school level. This is a great book for the beginning teacher and/or the middle-school teacher of theatre. It provides an acceptable educational structure while still acknowleging the creative side of the subject.
I purchased this book earlier this year prior to teaching 7th & 8th grade drama for my first time (I am primarily an English teacher). While I came nowhere close to teaching out of this book day-by-day, it was an invaluable resource to me. The informational sections were a great resource for me in creating presentations, and I used a number of the readings and activities straight from the book. The evaluation tools were also very helpful. Couple this book with a book on theater games and a couple books of scenes and monologues and you have the foundation for a middle school drama curriculum!
If you are new to drama clubs/classes or an experienced teacher, this book is very helpful in providing structure to a class/program. It took a little bit of time to work through the book, but once I understood how the author put it together, it was very easy to develop a great program for the kids.
Although I have been active in theater arts for many years, this is the first time I am teaching a course in it. The material is presented in a user friendly form, the student pages are included, teaching tips are readily available, as well as work sheets and evaluations. This book is well worth the cost. Iris
As a new teacher, I hope this book will provide the help I've been seeking. But I'm finding it confusingly arranged and excessively chatty. The first section discusses point systems, substitute plans and other minutiae in great detail, while the actual syllabus finally appears unheralded on page 106. Nothing is referenced by page numbers, so I'm constantly flipping back and forth, looking for the material the author references. Maybe I'll get used to it as the year goes on. But at this point it's pretty maddening.
Eh. It's okay. I'm a middle school art/ drama teacher and was needing a nice and helpful book for drama curriculum and this one is okay. My background is more in the art world so I really do need some help with drama content and was hoping this book would provide some. It has some helpful things like tests, games, worksheets, and such but no real day by day curriculum map.
