This is the first time I have taken any Biochem course, and the book has been great. It has a "waiting room" at the beginning of every chapter with people presenting with different symptoms related to the chapter, then the chapter itself is quite dense, but it gives you little clinical tid-bits along the way. The end of each chapter explains the outcome and/or treatment for each patient. It really helps the information stick. I am using this for Biochem as a prereq for PA school, and recommend it for anyone applying to a graduate health science program. After using this book, I really understand the biochemistry of the body, and the balance of body fluid chemistry is something I am very comfortable with. If you are someone who struggled with Organic Chemistry but loved physiology, this book is for you.
The first lecturer in my freshman biochem class was a Nobel Prize winner. I had difficulty staying awake. It can be a boring subject. Practically all the sections were taught by PhDs, intelligent men to be sure, but there was hardly any clinical correlation. We had to wait until junior year for that. Lieberman and Marks were not the first to use a clinical approach, but they are among the best when it comes to presenting a complex subject in meaningful steps. The sections and chapters are well organized. At the end of each chapter are Key Comments, Clinical Comments and Biochemical Comments. The review questions have a clinical slant. I have not read many other current biochemistry books designed for medical students, but I think this is an excellent one.
If you are planning on going into the medical field and need biochemistry this book is perfect for that It teaches you biochemistry but has real medical examples in the text to demonstrate the concepts. It is also really organized and easy to find stuff.
So far this book is very easy to read. The chapters are short and in wordings most students can understand as this is a biochemistry text after all. I really enjoy the waiting room sections in the beginning of each chapters which correlates the topic being discussed to real world medical patients with conditions that I as an RN have encountered with patients and later in the chapters they discuss treatments for those conditions and why such treatments are utilized based on the body's chemical reactions.I would definitely recommend this book.
Overall this is a good book. There were some typos with regards to chemical structure names (I believe it stated the name as propanone, but it was supposed to indicate propanol for a review question). Other than that it was a good textbook to review the different organ system processes.
This book is ok. The physical quality of the book is terrible. The pages come out very readily, and tear far too easily. The book would be greatly improved by providing a glossary. However the captions on the diagrams are very helpful. The text is usually pretty clear.
I needed this book for my Biochemistry graduate class. The beginning of the chapter includes a very informative summary that sets the precedent for the entire chapter.Each chapter is pretty short and an easy read.I wished it were a hardback book so that flipping to each section would be a little easier to navigate, but it's not a big problem. I did notice that some of the terms that my professor used were hard to find in the books index, so I would suggest they also incorporate "similar terms" for reference so that you can find the proper chapter for certain subjects.I also didn't like the book had so many chapters with similar content (lipids and steroids) and they weren't close to each other, so I did a lot of flipping around for the same type of things, but it's just how it's set up.
I decided to buy this book after reading through the "Look Inside" sample, and I'm glad I did. I wish this book had been around when I was in college in the 70s - it would have made studying organic chemistry so much easier!. Clinical cases help bring the material to life and concepts are repeated many times, making it easier to absorb them.This text appeals to my style of learning and I think that those who enjoy understandable explanations and repetition for reinforcement will find it well worth the money.
