I actually read and reviewed this book on my blog back in August, but recently it came to mind again. If the actual advice on how to be a good employee and what businesses are looking for were taken out and simply presented in a book, it would be successful. Things like having integrity, working hard, having a positive attitude and taking responsibility for yourself have done well for me, and being that she is herself a businesswoman, I imagine she knows what she is talking about. My problems came in how the Bible was used in this book. Another reviewer said that some of the connections between the workplace were really a stretch, and that is definitely true. Rather than taking from the Bible and applying it to the workplace, the author seems to have taken her admittedly good advice, and tried a bit too hard to make it fit the situations of Bible characters (people who were in radically different situations thousands of years ago). Things like the intervention of God and the power of the Holy Spirit are overlooked, such as in her chapter on the apostle Paul. There are hermeneutical issues and misinterpretations, climaxing in the chapter about Moses where she muses about how Moses and the Israelites must have been wondering why they were wandering the desert when it should have only taken a few weeks to reach the promise land (see Numbers 14, especially verses 32-34). It's not a fatal mistake or anything, but in a book about the Bible with a chapter about Moses, you would expect the author to at least once re-read Exodus through Deuteronomy, where the the reason it took them 40 years is hard to miss...I know I sound like a nitpicker, but this is a book that is representing the Bible, which I and the author both believe are the word of God.
First Hired Last Fired by Anita Agers-Brooks is subtitled How to Become Irreplaceable in Any Job Market because we live in a time when becoming complacent and believing you have job security can become costly. In an uncertain economic climate, finding and keeping a job is in the thoughts of many who are struggling to be able to support themselves and their families. The competition can be fierce, and your work ethic can make a difference in your vulnerability if your company is forced to downsize. Your attitude is also a major factor when it comes to working with others, your family life, and even your health. Using Biblical principles, and well known people we know from our Bibles, Anita Agers-Brooks gives a dozen examples of people you should emulate.Divided into 3 subsections, the book begins with Basic Principles featuring Joesph, Ruth, David, and Jacob. Next, we learn more about Paul, Esther, Zacchaeus, and Matthew in Growth Principles. Leadership Principles contains wisdom gained from the lives of Moses, Deborah, Jethro, and Jesus. Each chapter begins with a principle or issue relating to the workplace, followed by a fictionalized account of someone who is making poor decisions. An introduction to the Biblical person with a brief synopsis of how the issues they faced, is then followed by an account of the fictionalized person applying these principles to their job. Encouragement to use these examples in your own life with a few Investigative Questions to ask yourself ends each chapter.Sometimes I had a problem making the leap between the two fictionalized stories, but those were the ones where I need an attitude adjustment of my own. Overall, though, I found this technique of illustrating through words very useful and recommend this book highly.
