I'm a bit of a romantic, and I've always thought owning a B&B would be romantic. Seriously, how can someone *not* find owning an inn romantic after watching "Holiday Inn" with Bing Crosby?Well, Glen and Ann Stanford have cured at least a little of that.As with Glen's book, How I wrote 2 eBooks in 21 days, The Bread is in the Bed is part memoir and part how-to, but most definitely full of common sense advice that, I would suspect, is so common that it tends to get forgotten. Like plastic-wrapped paper cups and renting linens instead of owning - who would've thought? Glen and Ann also cover topics ranging from location to purchase price to dealing with bankers and what to do if your septic tank conks out during busy season. They use their own experiences to illustrate what worked for them and explain why they may work for you.They also offer some great marketing ideas - again, many of them common sense, but so obvious they may get overlooked.The best part about reading this book was that it's fun! Certainly operating a business should be a serious undertaking, but that doesn't mean you can't have a good time while doing so. Glen and Ann present great insights into running a B&B, and, even with the situations that must have been harrowing, stressful, and frustrating, offer them with a good dose of humor. My absolute favorite line in the book: "I left the cozy womb of ivory tower academia, only to be cesarean-sectioned into the business world with a swift smack on the ass." Coming in a close second was their assertion that "Northern New England has five seasons: spring, summer, fall, winter, and mud." Mostly because I always say that the seasons in Florida are: green, brown, hurricane, and tourist. It made me giggle.
